The Savage model 12 is an awfully good shooter for the money.  I've got the 12FLVSS (no longer available) in .22-250 and aside from the plastic stock, I am very happy with it (if they had offered the BVSS in lefty when I got mine, I'd have gone for that instead).

I can't speak to the Rem 700 VLS, but I do have the 700 VSF in .308.  Out past 300 yards it shoots tighter from the bench than my Savage 12.  It's got an H-S Precision composite stock with aluminum bedding block.  Unless you just have to have a wooden stock, consider the VSF too.

I don't have any experience with Winchesters or Rugers.

umm, if you want a good accurate rifle, you can't go wrong with winchester m70s.  I have few, all give under 1 MOA groups

I got a Ruger stainless VT (heavy barrel, floated, target trigger).

4 shots, 0.50" @ 200 yards, with the load I devleoped for my Savage sporter weight.

Since Winchester closed the New Haven plant the price on Model 70s has skyrocketed, even newer ones. I've waited for this kind of thing to die off before, and it never did. Buy one now if you can. Which is the better rifle, I don't know, I like the Ruger's looks.  :D

Rem' varmint rifle as first choice; Ruger varmint rifle as second choice.

if i had to settle for a Savage i'd personally be disappointed.   i greatly prefer an accurate hammer-forged barrel to a button-rifled unit.   i like the Rem's adjustable trigger and excellent accuracy.   i like the Ruger's metallurgy and the accuracy that Some claim to get with them.

just my sincere opinion after having worked with all three brands of rifles.

The Savage is not pretty, but will shoot with the best of them.  The accu-trigger is a great invention, and does wonders for the shootability of the rifle.  Mone came with scope and has decimated the woodchuck population out here.
