Need to know what to expect.
I have been considering Single Six Hunter and 617-6 for several months now and finally decided on the 617-6.
I looked at 2 different revolvers at 2 different gun shops and have the following question.
Do all of the S&W revolvers look dirty when new? The reason I went to another gun shop was because I thought the first revolver I saw was a used gun that they were trying to sell as new. Both of the revolvers I looked at looked like the needed a good scrubbing. They just looked used.
All of the chambers looked as though they had been shot. Residue rings in every chamber.
I have heard alot about the superior quality of these revolvers and wondered if cleaning after buying made them look better.
I was disappointed at what I saw in the 617-6.
The Single Six Hunter I saw looked like a new gun.

I have noticed in the past new in the box S&W's having fouling in some or all of the cylinders and barrel, I think this is left over from proof firing. Check the face of the cylinder and the top of the frame over the barrel and if there is a good amout of fouling or evidence of scrubbing it off it might be used.

I have a Smith&Wesson 617-6 I have had it for 4 years now it is a good gun and I like to shoot it.

:cb2: They don't clean them after they test fire them, and every one is test fired. Don't worry, it's not used.

IMHO, the 617 is the best DA .22 on the market. Even though it costs more than the Ruger, you're getting what you pay for. I have 2 Ruger .22 revolvers, and the 617. The 617 is by far the best. Mine is scoped, and has taken more squirrels than any other gun I own.

I agree with Old Griz. i bought an airweight that looked pretty used yet was brand new.

i am glad they test 'em so i won't complain

Last year my dad bought a brand new S&W model 60 (357 mag.) with the 3 inch barrel. It looked a little dirty out of the box but no big deal. I can't believe how good this little pistol shoots.

At any rate if all go's well I hope to get 3 or 4 revolvers over the next year or so, gonna sell the two I have now to make room for the ones I really want. They're all going to be Smith & Wesson. The first one is probably going to be a 629 Classic, them a 617 10shot, them a couple of 357 mag's.

I have a Ruger MK1&2 target models, but I always wanted a 22 revolver, I checked them all out, and aways returned to the the 617. I ordered one from Sheels a 6" 10 shot and paid $530. It may be able to be had a little cheaper I think it retails a little over $700. It is a great shooter and I ended up scoping it. The grandson will inherit it and so on.

:cb2: Back when I was selling these fun little play things, we got a video from S&W showing the factory and how these guns are made, etc., etc., etc. The really impressive 2 second blurp just showed a hand test firing a revolver. Granted, whoever it was didn't have to hit a target like Jerry Miculek, but I had never seen anyone fire 6 rounds through a revolver so fast in all my life. Of course, if that's your job, firing guns all day, I guess you develop a pretty strong trigger finger, but man, he was fast!

Of course, that explains why all new guns are dirty.
