S&W Replacement Sight with Fixed Configuration
« on: April 20, 2006, 02:02:45 PM »
As much as I like the tradtional S&W  adjustable micrometer adjustable sights, the reality is that once I get them dialed in, I  almost never change them again.  They're  somewhat fragile and they have a tendency to "snag" .  The Smith "fixed" sight , a milled groove in the top strap, on the more utilitarian Military & Police models, is  totally snag free and can't be broken or knocked out of whack.

Also, certain models come only in adjustable sight configuration, such as the old M-19 and the  L frame 586 with the 2.5 " barrel, not to mention the .41 and 44 mags.

So I"m thinking:

The Smith  adjustable sight is  secured to the top strap by a single screw and is easily removed and replaced. Why doesn't someone manufacture a replacement  rear sight that has a milled frame, fixed rear  sight configuration  to replace  the  comparatively fragile and snag prone micrometer?  With a simple screwdriver and this part, you could convert an adjustable sight Smith into a more durable "Military & Police" configuration in a matter of minutes.  One could easily switch back and forth  between this and the original adjustable sights  as one wished and restore the gun to its original configuration.

Does anyone else think this is a useful idea?

Many thanks for your head's up on this one. This is exactly what I had in mind, although I did not think a new front sight would be needed.
