Keep us posted on what you do and how it works. Just be careful it will be a flame thrower also.

I had an encore barrel cut back to 18".  It made for an unbelievably compact little package.  You could shoot it as either a pistol or a rifle.   I couldn't think of a better gun for woods hunting.  It also makes a great treestand rifle.

I personally wouldn't cut it shorter than 18"....If you plan on shooting real heavy loads in it..you'll probably need to add weight to the stock to tame it down..1-1/2lb to 2lbs..and the gun will be stock heavy before cutting it...and even more so after cutting it...Muzzle blast is another factor to consider...My 1895GS has a 18-1/5" barrel...and it is LOUD with my 300 grain Nosler load...my ported one was even louder....mild cowboy loads wern't too bad..but they were even better in my 26" 1895 Cowboy model..

If it was a pistol caliber Handi i'd say saw away since most of the powder is burned away in 16", but in 45/70 cut to 16" it will be louder, and throw a nice flame as mentioned by others unless of course that's what you want.

I am trying to think of a reason for a 16" barrel & especially on a single shot rifle. A bolt/lever gun of the same length would have a 12" barrel, never mind the legal part, so are you hunting in an area so thick that a
"brush" lever rifle could not be used at all. The Handi Rifle in 45-70 is shorter than a lever action 30-30 now. If you feel that you need to cut the
tube, I would do as Mac stated & cut to 18". You saw the picture of the Encore in 18". Who would need a shorter gun than that?

I hunt in the Missouri Ozarks and a lot of it is pretty thick stuff.  I have never had a problem getting through it with my normal length 45/70.  Of course I am not particularly handy with tools but I get nervous when some of you guys talk about customizing your rifles. :)   Maybe I might feel more positive about it had I not had some bad experiences with my own MacGyvering.

I think it's the perfect thing to do, if what you want is a huge muzzle blast and you're willing to give up a few hundred feet per second.

Hey Rathammer, I was looking at your avatar and noticed that the thrust levers have migrated from the center console to the overhead panel.  Be careful you don't bang your head.

 What is the type?
