Does this make sense?
« on: April 14, 2006, 05:58:21 PM »
I have a really nice FN Fabrique with Mauser action in a 30-06 caliber.  This was made from a 1951 FN Mauser made for the Belgium Army in 30-06 caliber so it has the same barrel it was made with.  It shoots really well .500 to .750 groups whenever its not to windy and I can get my breathing correct.  I was thinking about converting it to a .300 Winchester Magnum, the action and barrel are strong enough so all I would have to do it have the chamber reamed out to the .300 Mag dimensions.  The 30-06 and the .300mag rounds are the same overall length.  3.334" long so the magazine compartment would not need changing.  I have read a lot of stories about how flat the .300 Mag shoots and the range and energy loads it carries.  I have another 30-06 in a Remington 7600 which shoot well and is a nice hunting gun so I am not cutting my nose off despite my face.
Any opinions you guys can give me will be appreciated.

Thank you,

You will also have to have the bolt face opened up for the bigger magnum head. If this my gun I would keep it as is if you have to have a 300mag the money you would spend you could pick up a econ model.

30-06 vs 300 Win Mag.

If you look at the Hornady light mags, the ballistics are very close to the 300 Win mag.   This includes trajectory, and down range energy.

I'd keep it an 06, and if I needed more power I'd go to a bigger caliber, not a faster bullet of the same caliber.

Thanks you for the answers, I think I will redo the stock and make it real pretty and keep it the way it is.  Thats a good idea about looking for a cheap one and Hornady ammo is another.  I think I will go buy some and try it out.   Have a nice weekend gentlemen and thanks again.

What you are considering is a crap shoot. There is a chance the rifle will not shoot as well as it does now.  I wouldn't take the risk, but maybe the rifle isn't one of your favorites. That would make a difference.
