Shot the 9.3x62 today!!
« on: April 14, 2006, 12:09:48 PM »
First time to shoot a 286 gr. bullet!  I had a Limbsaver on it and wore a Past recoil pad, the smallest one.  It pushes instaed of a sharp recoil.  There is no question this baby has some nuts!!!  When I sighted in at this gravel pit last time I had a 30-06 with 180gr. Barnes TSX.  I took a shovel with and dug the bullets out of the sand and gravel about a foot and a half in after they passed through some wood in front of it.  I dug in two and a half feet and still no 286gr. bullet just the bullet path.  Gave that up.

The gun is very accurate.  With open sites I was touching holes at 40 yards.  The gun shoots better than my eyes with open sites.  Getting this ready for a Black Bear hunt this spring in Manitoba.  All shots over bait at 20 yards.  When I first got the gun the small concave sight at the front was tough for me to see when aimimg.  A gunsmith told me to get some orange glow paint used on fishing jigs.  I stirred it up and put it on the concave section with a toothpick.  It painted the inside concave part of the site like it was done at the factory.  It really sticks out now.  It also stands out in dusk and when aiming at dark colors, like Black Bear.

I shot the gun a half dozen times and have a lot of confidence at this short range.  Still has a pretty good kick and wouldn't want to sit at the bench for a couple boxes of shells.  Also with a 20" barrel it makes plenty noise, a strong low rumble!!  The firearm has perfect balance for me.  I really think I have found my Bear and Moose gun.  Great Day!!!!

I'm glad its working well for you!!  The 9.3 is a great all around big game rifle and a perfect fit for a treestand rifle for bear.   My 9.3 doesn't kick that bad either.  That orange paint idea is a good one, any contrast is going to help when aiming at a dark target like a bear.  You might want to put a white U under the notch on the rear sight with whiteout or liquid paper, might help even more.

Well it got the best of me that I didn't find a bullet yesterday so I went out with a bigger shovel and dug and sifted and found one.  The gravel pit has a mix of 2" crushed rock and sand and gravel where I shoot.  The bullet shaved off about 60grns. of lead on a rock clean off the exposed top.  The bullet is a Round Nose.  The copper is fairly thick and stopped the expansion at 1/2 of the way down the bullet.  I was pretty impressed to go into that pile of sand and rocks and still look really good.  I am certian a bear will not do this much damage to the bullet.  It still has a wide profile and the copper jacket sticks out jagged.  I can't bend it with my fingers so I think this is one wicked bullet.  It was very accurate for close range , under fifty yards open sites.  I have total confidence in this cartridge.  I think this would be great for under 200yards for bear, moose and so forth.  This ammunition costs around $ 15.00 a box at Graf and Sons.  I think that is a awesome deal!  The bullet also has a couple rings like a Barnes TSX.  This is a tough bullet for a conventional bullet.  I am really glad I found it.  I would not have learned as much about it's make up and ability to that kind of abuse!   Buckfever
