New Sako couple of ???
« on: April 13, 2006, 11:16:06 AM »
Hi,

I just picked up a new Sako 75 Deluxe, it was one of those things I had to have, it took me over a year to save up for it, but I definetly feel it was worth it. The fit and finish is excellent, it was worth the wait. First question I have is, what are the best scope mounts to use for it. I plan on putting on a ziess conquest 3x9x40, does this seem like a good choice. I got the gun in 7mm Rem. and really anxious to see what it will do at the range, what kind of groups are you guys getting with the sako's with factory ammo.

Thanks for the help.

Congrats on a great choice of rifle.  It may be too nice to take out hunting :) .  I just put a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 on a New Sako 270.  I prefer either the Leupold or regular Zeiss rings.  Never had any problems with either.

Cannot comment on factory loads because all I shoot thru mine are handloads.

Enjoy a mighty fine rifle.

My Sako varmint has an integral rail milled into the receiver...I used tally mounts/rings...all in one... They are nice..don't waste money on the QD feature, the regular are just fine...trimmer looking too..........mike in ct

I"d opt for the Sako OptiLock or Burris Signature rings.  They both have the polymer insert sleeve that protects the scope (no ring marks) as well as helping make sure the scope is perfectly aligned with the bore.  Great rifle and scope combo.  I'll bet you love it.

Leupold mounts are hit and miss on the Sakos.
You need to check that they line up properly or you'll bend a fine scope.
The Optilocks are to big and ugly for my money.
I went with original early model Sako mounts on my A11 and 461, couldn't be happier.
As with all my scope rings, had them lapped, then bedded the scopes with Devcon, perfect fit, no damage to the scopes.

On my two 75's (7 mag-300wm) I have the regular leupold mounts, no problems at all.

Handwerk, out of interest have you removed the scopes from the mounts?
Find the scopes generally work OK on the gun.
It's the marks and dents on a quality scope that is the problem.
Kills the resale and not a good look if you happen to swap scope to another gun.

I would say DO NOT use the Sako optilocks. I had accuracy issues after about 7 yrs of use. I installed warne rings and I was back in business! Plastic is going to give over time and the ring's screws were bottomed out, couldn't tighten any more.

Hmm  I thought they were a little high but never heard of any accuracy issues.  The ones I have used are like a bank vault in ruggedness and match the finish on my gun perfectly.d    Leupold 1piece base/rings are NG because they don't have a stop pin on the rear base. The new Leupold bases solve this problem and are similiar to Optilock bases in fact they practically copy them. Burris and Conetrol are other choices if you want that 40mm scope mounted lower.

I love the Sako Optilocks. I think they are the best scope mount made. I have never had one compress and bottom out. I also like the Burris signature. You have to be careful to not overtighten the screws when you use plastic insert rings. They are easy to overtighten because they don't feel like they are getting tight because you are just compressing the plastic.
