A mad idea....a Martini Cadet sxs double rifle or cape gun?
« on: April 11, 2006, 03:29:54 PM »
While pondering chambering a Cadet action I'm hopefully getting to 44 Magnum it struck me that if I could score another identical action a Cadet double rifle in 44 Mag would be very cool.
I've seen a falling block style German double rifle and they look very cool as the block sits in a single square frame and drops to reveal both chambers.
Here's a link:

Scroll down until you find the pics of the "Rare dropping block double rifle in calibre 11.1".
Looks pretty trick, huh?
If I had the Cadet double built there would be the standard issues(e.g. your barrels grouping about an inch apart at best and lots of load development to get them as close as possible) but I think 2 actions could be bolted together and work well with some creative stock design and lever shaping.
Add an adjustable bracket near the muzzles and you should also be able to compensate the barrels.
The other approach is simply have independent sights for each barrel and try and keep them grouping as closely as possible.
Heavy barrels would probably help and even a predictable 3 inch difference in point of impact between the barrels is o.k. under 100yds on medium game.
More accurate longer shots could be taken using a single barrel.
The only rub would be modifying the triggers to be practical because 2 triggers side by side are just ASKING for double discharge and no gunsmith in his right mind would be satisfied with that.
While it's not long range gun it'd certainly put the hurt on a roo, goat or pig out to about 100yds in much the same way big double rifles are using within 75yds for dangerous game like lion, buffalo and elephant.
For this purpose the ideal sights would of course be some sort of express sights for a classic feel or perhaps a ghost ring for more practicality.
The other cool option is to make a sort of sxs Cape Gun with 2 different rifle barrels, one in a cartridge like .223 or .222 with a rimless extractor & a scope mounted on it and the other in 44 Mag with a ghost ring or express sights on it.
Less issues with grouping but much more necessity to make the triggers independent.
It would be good for long varmint work and for close up medium game shots depending on the choice of barrel.
Which ever way an easy way to avoid barrel issues would be to have 2 zero taper 1" octagonal barrels
Anyhow, I've rambled on at length.
I know......I'm nuts and it may turn out to be an expensive waste of time. :|
Then again, it might turn out to be a VERY cool item. 8)
Now feel free to speculate or vent about my lack of a decent grip on reality.

Cheers & God Bless
