For a cheap stainless that will defenetly give you good groups, you can't beat the prices of Howa rifles($300-350).  If u wanna know how they preform talk to anyone who owns a Weatherby Vanguard, its the same rifle

Man I hate buying a new gun....last two new ones I bought were trouble..no names, No flame wars OK ?? These days lack of quality or ramdom quality ..hit or miss [grin grin] I tell u look around for a higher end used bolt rifle save a few bucks...If a two seventy is your favorite I can tell u looking around there is no shortage of those...I picked up a really nice old sako for 600 bucks...I was going to convert it to a 35 whelen..Dam thing shoots so good I wont part with it...I picked up a 270 savage & converted it myself..Now I've done 3 different calibers...If u want to just buy it & shoot great..but I like to think of a rifle as something to work on a project gun...Can't beat savage..Put in a good trigger or find an accutrigger model in the caliber u want...Good quality stocks & replacement barrels are out there for short money..I could see a guy owning a savage 308 for deer in a sporter stock..after deer season stripping it down change the barrel to a 22-250 or 243 varmint weight barrel put it into a heavy stock that matches its use Change the scope & u have a varmint rig all summer....The rifle that never sleeps...Eventually I want two finished my way savage actions...& stocks/barrels  to make them work..A standard 473 bolt face short action & a small face 223 diameter bolt face...I really like rifle basic triggers for savage actions.. use standard bases to mount your scopes.. keep it simple stay mostly the same & the utility conveinace becomes simple...swapping scopes is too easy that way...I'll stop now I think u get the idea..I'm not fond of having to send something away to be fixed I'd rather do it myself & make what I want....mike in ct

You can't go wrong with Savage.  Seems like I see more of thease as the range. I have a good friend who has about 6 or 7 of them, he loves them. For years I have always had other brands( still have them) which handel and shoot well to.

One day I bought a savage, I really like it. Two weeks ago I bought another  one. Like I said before I like other brands of rifles to, what do I think of them savage rifles? I will be getting a third one.

I have a stainless Savage 116 in 300 RUM. It's a tack driver. When I'm having a good shooting day I get 1/4" to 3/8" three shot groups with it.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I have a 16Fss and it is a sweet little rifle. Groups of 5/8" at 100 yards are the norm. In the last couple of months, I've seen 16FSSs in 7mm
WSM and .270 WSM for $349 and $350 at the local Wal Mart and Bi Mart.  It is a lot of rifle for the money.
