I build nice sporters from military Mausers. Usually a new stock, new barrel, d&t for scope, trigger, new bolt handle, etc. On the one I finished a couple of weeks ago, I used the original barrel as it was a mint condition 30/06 (Colombian FN30), along with a chopped Venezuelan FN30 stock. I usually favor the laminate stocks, but this one was so pretty that I couldn't bring myself to toss it. Full length tigerstriping with a paduak (bright red) nosecap. Really nice weight and balance, looks good, and shoots good.
The one I am working on now is a previously sporterized 1909 Argentine, with a crappy military 7mm barrel on it. Already have a new .280 Remington barrel in hand, but not installed or headspaced yet. Ordered a CoreLite stock for it, but after looking at that, I will be sending it back! Ordered a couple more stocks, but they aren't here yet. Modified the floorplate release lever to include a raised hump inside the triggerguard, so I don't need 2 hands to pop the floorplate! Cut rear wall from magazine and added a new rear wall, magazine length went from 3.320" to 3.430". Rings and mounts are on order, bolt handle (previously forged, not bad), is on hold until stock/rings/scope combination is checked out, but I will probably weld on a new bolt handle. The original plan was for a phosphate metal finish with a composite stock, but nothing is final yet. Bolt lugs, receiver face and torque shoulder, and bolt face will all be lapped/trued before headspacing. Basically on hold for parts and materials, but everything should be here by this weekend!
