550 American in 6.5x55
« on: April 01, 2006, 07:23:56 PM »
Hello all!  I was wondering what you all could tell me about this rifle?  I am really considering buying one.  I don't know much about the 6.5, but I do hear that they shoot wonderfully and do a great job on game, all the while not beating up the shooter.  Thanks for any info.

The 6.5x55's are wonderful but, do you handlaod? Biggest flaw in that cartridge is that factory stuff is really mild. Don't get me wrong, it'll do the job but good handloads are lot's better. If you don't handload, I'd take a look at the 260 Rem if CZ chambers it.

Another thing about handloading is bullets. I'm not sure you can get factory stuff for the 6.5x55 or the 260 Rem in 130 gr class bullets. I like those weights along with the 140gr bullets. Presently working with 129gr Hornadys.

My nephew and his wife have a pair of CZs in 6.5 X 55.
Both rifles group under an inch @ 100 yards.
Reloader 22 powder and the 140 grain Sierra BTSP do very well.
As far as the .260 Remington goes, I think it's ok with bullets up
to 120 grains or so. If you lean towards 140 and 160 grain bullets
in this caliber, the 6.5 Swedish is a better choice.
This is because the longer bullets will not have to be seated
deeply into the case. A longer neck and throat in the Swedish chambering
favors those longer bullets.
With a decent 140 grain bullet, the Swedish Mauser should be
a good deer caliber out to about 250 yards.
120 grain bullets will stretch that distance some, as far as
a slighty better trajectory goes as I recall.
