« on: March 31, 2006, 04:59:33 PM »
Does anyone use the 375 on medium game. What do you guys think of the 375 as an all round gun. I'm thinking of getting on in an #1-H,but my friend wants one in a bolt or #1-H.Thanks for the info. :-)

I dunno man, ANY gun you pick and wanna make it your "primary" all-around rifle is the one rifle that you MUST shoot a lot to familiarize your self with it..... 375 h&h ? shoot it alot ? OUCH !!! both on the shoulder and on the wallet....I don't care what people say, and SOME will tell you that a 375 h&h doesn't kick all that bad at all.... trust me it does... IT KICKS AND IT KICKS HARD (yes some people can tolerate recoil better than others, but still, 375 h&h kicks)

You gotta be a practical thinker here, you wanna get a rifle for medium game hunts ? whats wrong with a typical 308 / 270 / '06 / 7mm mag or the likes..??

Dave Hall I am a lover of the old 375H&H, Have had severel but got ahold of a Number one and was i ever dissapointed. That gun kicked my butt worse than a farmer can whip a mule. I put a mercury coil in it plus a heavy recoil pad and it still kicked the whey out of me. I have a Sako 375 Weatherby that i shoot all the time and it don't kick near as bad as the #1 did. I would give that some thought before i bought one. Thats just an opinion. Good luck Sir :D ............Joe...........

Keep in mind that in Africa, hunters consider the .375H&H TO BE an all around rifle.  We all know that the .375H&H is used for really big game like Kudu, Cape Buffalo, and even Elephant, but did you know that they also use it on much smaller game?  I have seen shows on ESPN, etc. where hunters used their .375H&H on shots at those really small deer - Thompson's Gazellles, and other tiny deer, and even then at 200 Yards!   That may not be considered far for a .270, .30-06, etc., but I never considered the .375H&H to be a 200 yard gun.

Now let me talk to you about personal experience.  I have only used my .375H&H on wild hogs.  In Texas, hogs have a way of coming back to life after you shoot them, even multiple times, with standard cartridges.  I got irritated one year so I bought the .375H&H.  I used 300 grain Nosler Partitions. With one shot, the hog dropped and never came back to life.  The problem is that the Partitions opened up a bit and caused a serious exit hole.

I wouldn't hesititate to use the .375H&H on a whitetail, only if it was a round nose that would not expand, and only if it was on a lung shot where it wouldn't cause much damage, and only if I didn't have any other gun.

Bottom line, the .375H&H can be an all purpose round in Africa, but our version of the .375 in the US is probably the .30-06.

Yea what are your plans??? You plan on shooting factory or custom ammo??
IMO they need smith work, trigger, barrel and are you willing to put some quality optics on it??
They are far from a primary gun. A friend of mine who has one here in Alaska would like to make his into a primary gun because he is to cheap to buy another gun.
Were leaving in one month for a Brown Bear hunt down on the AK Peninsula and he's still screwing around with it trying to get a decent group.
They don't kick any worse than my Tikka T3 Lite 338 pushing 250 grain A frames I can tell you that.
Honestly I would save your money, if you hunt the US and want a all around gun, if that exists buy a 300.

I don't think a primary gun should be anything over a 308 or even a 30-06.  My idea of a "primary" gun is (again) a gun that your willing to shoot and shoot ALOT so you can become very familiar with it, and a 300 mag isn't something your gonna want to shoot it all day long.

I know some people don't want to shoot thier deer rifles alot, they only like to shoot it before hunting season (to sight it in), and during the hunts. but I totally disagree with that, A hunting rifle is like a sports car, why buy one and put it in your garage ?!?!

Get 1 rifle, and shoot the living crap out of it, learn eactly how it works with all the factory loads, learn which load gives you best groups, and when you find that load, shoot it some more, and some more, and some more until you become a marksman with that particular gun / round, then go hunting :) and I guarantee you, whatever round you picked for your training, you will be a succesfull hunter
