I am looking to purchase a new rifle for moose hunting and would like to know what others think about the following that I have in mind.

Savage American Classic Model 114 DM 30-06
Savage Hunter Series Model 111FCNS DM 30-06
Remington Model 710 DM 30-06
Remington Model 700 BDL DM 30-06
Remington Model 700 SPS DM 30-06 8)

What guns do you have now? How often will you be elk or moose hunting?
Do you reload?

If you already have a 308, 270, 280 you may want to go with one of the newer short mags like the 300 wsm or the new 338 Fed.

out of that group i would go with the savage classic. middle of the road price but great accuracy and dependability, and the finish is very nice. a classy looking rifle.

the BDL is too nice to drag with you through the woods and maybe get a scratch on...the 710 is a piece of crap, the SPS isn't finished nicely enough for my tastes...at least, the blued ones aren't.

I'd go with the Remington 700 BDL.   I'd love to knock a scratch or two into it while moose hunting.   Either of your choices will make a great gun, but the BDL or DM are just classy looking rifles.  30.06 is an excellent choice in caliber as well.

Out of that list, the Savage American Classic.  There are many other rifles that will fit the bill as well.  Just make sure they don't come in a green box.

Ok...
number 1)  scratch out remington 710, if you get this gun, you will be officially holding the ugliest bolt action rifle ever made

number 2) all other remingtons will do the job just fine, it really comes down to YOUR preference:
Wood finish ?
synthetic ?
stainless steel or blue ?

number 3) If I was in your shoes, I would LOOK hard into those ruger bolt-actions all-weather (synthetic stock and stainless steel) they go for about $477 from walmart and, I honestly favor them more than the remington 700s.

number 4) Is there anyways I can talk you out of getting a 30-06 ?  I simply would prefer a 7mm mag,

Ain't no flys on the .30-06 with good 180 grain bullets. Its best defense is that current loads exceed those of the origninal .300 H&H Magnum.  :wink:

I'd go hunting with a switch before I'd own a Savage.  Lotsa good rifles out there, so why buy a Savage.  Yeah, yeah, everybodies heard the BS about "out of the box accuracy"  but I don't see any winners standing for the trophy pix.

Buy the green box and have the best gun money can buy. Regardless of what some say the 700 Remington is the one to buy. If you deside to sell it or trade it off you won't take it in the shorts like you will on some of the others. Good luck sir :D ........Joe........

OSO 45-70, I am a born again Remington fan but what I was trying to point out is that if a fellow doesn't want to buy a Reminton, he doesn't have to default to a butt ugly Savage.

I do find it humorous that the Rem bashers will discry the "lack of quality" in a Remington and then recommend buying a Savage.  Go figure?

Yep its amazing how dog eats bone and poops hair. I have had nothing but good luck with Remington products for more years than i care to tell and don't have a gripe with them. Most of my Remington rifles are old just like me. There have been some posters here that made a career of bashing Remingtons and some wanna be's followed in thier foot steps. Thats ok the world will still rotate no matter what any one thinks and i will still buy Remingtons and shoot little one hole groups without fear of a major malfunction :D  :D  :D ............Joe.......

To my knowledge Savage doesnt sponser pro shooters. Anyone else notice this? I also don't know of any trophy shooters who shoot "out of the box" rifles.

See if you can't find your self a 35 Whelen or a 358 Winchester. Heck even a 338-06 would be fine but to my knowledge only Weatherby makes them.

And it would be just a little different.

The Savage classic is a fine looking rifle and Savages are the rifle to buy for a no tinkering needed accurate shooter.  The DM would also get my vote as Remington has a huge supply of aftermarket parts available and are easily turned into super accurate rifles.  Besides I just like rifles with detachable mags.  I'm hopefully getting my 700 back soon all blueprinted, sitting in a aluminum bedding block laminate stock, and fitted with a detachable magazine. :P

I'd take any except the 710.  Apologies to those that own them, but I don't care for them.  Had a Savage and would gladly own another.  Have a BDL and love it.  But my preference is Ruger.

Go with the .700 BDL, good  and proven gun.  I have a .710, and it works just fine, though the bushnell they put on it is kind of a piece.

I have Winchesters,Remingtons and Rugers,and Marlins.I never owned a Savage so I don't have any words,good or bad about them.I've really come to like the Ruger's the best.All the others that I own are fine and great rifles and have never given me any problems.I like the CRF of the Rugers,their stocks,their blueing,the fit and feel and their bedding system.As far as the accuracy goes,all my Rugers have shot less then 1 inch @100yards,out of the box and now they print right around half inch groups with a little trigger work.Some say that a Ruger can't group.I question their shooting ability at the bench.

The Savage Classic rifles are very good looking IMHO, as are their laminated varmint rifles.  And yes, they do shoot!

Rugers have classic looks and are very appealing to the eye even though they don't have rosewood fore-end caps or high-gloss finishes.  I have yet to stumble across a Ruger that doesn't shoot very well indeed, but my experience is limited to 6 or 7.  Here's how mine shoot:

.22-250 = 0.5" @ 200 yards (M77 MKII VT)
.257 roberts - 0.232" @ 100 yards (M77)
7mm Rem Mag = 0.262" @ 100 yards (M77)
300 Win Mag = 0.85" @ 100 yards (M77 MKII)
