Dave,what is a good time to come up north???I'm getting my stuff piled up for my next trip to Alaska.The last time I came up in June to Kayak the Yukon,but I was a little early the ICE was just going out.This time I will Be looking for GOLD,I would like to get up before the black flys get to rough. :roll: Kurt

Just so ya know, Dave's still out of state right now I believe. His dad's ill and he's visiting with him in Florida. Wish I could help ya but I just arrived last June myself...and you couldn't cover my pinkie nail with the gold I've panned.

Well, since Dave is out of town, I'll throw in my .02. Late June early July is probably your best bet, if you are wanting to keep the bugs to a minimum. Even then, the skeets are going to be bad as are the no-seeums, etc... Problem is the dang things come out as the snow melts. Its either cold, buggy or raining. Sometimes all three. Take your pick. If you are going to the interior for gold panning (quite a bit is done in Southcentral and the bugs are less, but so is the gold) early to mid June is the time.

If you decide to come up in July, just bring your headnet, plenty of bug dope and rain gear. And have fun.

A good friend of mine goes up year to do some gold panning. Due to the work he does, he usually goes in July or August. Don't ask me to tell you where he goes, because he won't tell me. He's brought back quite a bit. Mostly for his collection, not to make money on.

I had fun when I was up there the last time and I found a lot of collar.I was close to Chicken working the creek and behind the big rocks,scratched out quite a bit untill I found a claim marker,so I high tailed out of there I didn't want to get caught high grading I didnt have my flag jacket on

You know how the town of Chicken, Alaska got it's name dontcha? A bunch of folks were sitting around trying to name their little town, but no one could spell "Ptarmigan" (what they wanted to call it), so they named it Chicken!!!

There's a book (thick pamphlet really) that names places and has sketch maps of where to prospect for gold -- even grades them or tells what to expect. If you're interested, shoot me a private e-mail. I'll see how much it is and send you one if you'd like to buy it.

I think both the BLM and the Chugach National Forest have "notebook series" publications that address places on lands they manage for gold. I don't know if the park service does, but I think the State does.

I was thinking of the Chicken area too. I stopped into the BML and State Division of Land in Delta Junction and did not recieve a warm welcome. It seems that much of the area is well claimed up. I drove through there in the summer or 2001 and it is really being hit hard. The main creek bed was well dug up and people were all over the place at claims.

A better bet might be: The Chugach National Forest in the Reserection
Creek area and Petersville State Prospectiong area. I took 2-3 ounces out of Petersville 2 years ago. There are a ton of areas to try and new claims are filed every year. The main problem is transportation back in. I have a Chineese ruck sack that holds a 5-gallon pail, a #2 shovel, 1/4" screen, hand trowel, hand rake, and 2 pans as well as the other necessities like a .44 mag and 300 grain hardcast and bug dope.

Ya need anything more like maybe a grubstake? :grin:

I read that Historical sign at Chicken,It mentioned a Brottle being in town back when it was booming.I went in to get a bite to eat at a little stop there so I asked were is the Brottle and that gal just about rolled on the floor and said it's been gone for about 80 yrs.Nice folkes,It was going on 10 pm to late to get something to eat that sun up your way put me behind :-D
My Son got me a membership for the GPAA for my birthday so I will probly be going to Nome on there claim.TNX. again. Lp.

hey lead pot
Gpaa has A couple of spots on the kenai penns and
one in Manly Hotsprings that the guy runs his claim and
lets gpaa members use his equipment and they mine as a
group and split the take after expenses paid.I know
some people who did the same in Nome and had a great time.
