What rifle caliber has the best chance of being around in another 100 years and still being popular?  That is if we still have guns.

I think in another 100 yrs gunpowder will be a thing of the long ago past.  Sooner or later something will come along that will make the way WE do things obsolete.  A time when your Winchester and Remington Calenders and other name brand items will be collector items.  Not because of politics but because of so called progress and lack of interest from the youngsters.

I'm glad that I will be long gone before that happens.  Some people think  the bright spot is that this armed society has not kept pace with progress.  We are still basically held with old, out of date ideas.   After all, the term "Keep and Bear Arms" meant the weapons of the times.  We HAVE NOT kept up with "arms" progress.  And for that, alot of people are grateful.  Not that I would want to drop a Cluster Bomb, a Bunker Buster or use 'Puff the Magic Dragon' on a herd of deer...........

Well, maybe just once.

Dear God Lefty.  I pray you're wrong.  Then again, I never thought the "Patriot Act" would be renewed.......  We're all so willing to give up freedoms that "don't affect us."  Next thing ya know there will be cities in the US where it is illegal to smoke in public....  Oh wait, that has already happened.  Maybe you're right.  FWIW, I detest smoking.

100 yrs from now...  I'm going with the aught six.  I mean really, think about it.  100 yrs ago this year, the dang cartridge was popularized by Springfield.  Think about the changes we've expierienced since then.  All the "improved" cartridges, and the .30-06 remains the standard for North American big game hunting.

Each generation expieriences change and difficutlties.  We will persiviere, as will the aught six.  There's something to be said for tradition.  My rifle looks like my Grandpa's rifle.  I'm willing to bet that my son will want his rifle to look like his Grandpa's rifle.....

.22 lr - Inexpensive. Millions of guns out there in just about every configuration.  Great training round.  No recoil.  Unfortuantely, its just too handy to use for those with illegal intentions.

.30-30 -  Regarded as the quintessential deer cartridge.  Has already existed for over 100yrs and shows no signs of slowing down.  Low recoil in any type of rifle.

.30-06 - Arguably the perfect cartridge design in terms of bullet weight, performance/powder capacity ratio and cartridge size.  Often regarded as the most recoil the average person can sustain comfortably.  Capabilities of be used for anything on the continent.  Range of bullet weights available to cover just about any type of hunting or shooting.

We cannot forget that each of these cartridges are available just about everywhere one could purchase ammo and will not break the bank to purchase.  Each has been around for over 100yrs, already.

I would like to think that most of what we have now will still be here. Shooter's as a group cannot be beat but we can beat ourselves. Should that happen, the 22 LR, the 30-06 and the 223 Rem. Better add the 12 ga.

We should be eternally vigilant in protecting our Second Amendment rights, but I think we can do it. Nothing new about the anti-gun movement. I have an October, 1922 copy of Outdoor Life magazine. Letters to the editor and a brief article describe a move afoot to eliminate the manufacture and sale of all pistols, all calibers, revolvers and autos!! I suppose there were shooters around then that thought we would never make it to the 21st century with our guns. Nothing wrong with being negative  as long as you don't give up on the never ending fight.

Greetings!

I think it's almost impossible to predict anything 100 years into the future, but if pressed, I think there's an excellent chance these cartridges will still be around:

12 Gauge
.22LR
.223 Rem.
.270 Win.
7.62x39
.308 Win.
.30-06
9mm Luger
.45 ACP

Those are the only cartridges I would be willing to bet money on still existing, although I would also give both the .243 Win. and 7mm Rem. Mag. excellent chances of surviving.

Best wishes,
Bawko

Tell you what, I would rather go forward a 100 years and bring back some of the cartridges that they have come up with by then

.22
.30-06
12 gauge

I'll give them 300 years
