Lube for Pyrodex and 777
« on: March 16, 2006, 03:07:04 AM »
Hi All, I am quite familiar with shooting BP in my cartridge rifles, but somebody just gave me a bunch of Pyrodex and some 777 to play with. Never used that, and my question is what sort of lube to use on the bullets? Should I stick with a BP specific lube, or will 50/50 or even Lee tumble lube work? I figured I'd ask before I made a mess of my rifle and had to pull down a bunch of ammo!

I've shot a little Pyrodex in my 45/70 and have used Emmert's Lube and it worked pretty good.  I've also been playing with a mixture of canning parafine and Dexron III.  It seems to be working pretty good in both my black powder and Pyrodex loads, no leading and keeps the fouling soft, but the weather hasn't been above 60 degrees yet.  It'll be interesting to see what it does when it warms up.  I clean up with a 50/50 mix of alcohol and Murphy's oil.
Thanks,

Hi Nobade.
Lee alox works great with 777. Use it for Snider & Vetterli rounds on occasion.
Cheers

I like 777 the best of all the replica black powders but have only used one pound of it in my BPC rifles.  I used SPG and couldn't have been more pleased with the results.

I use whatever lube comes with the comercial bullet if loading comercial.  For my cast bullets, I rely on a home-brewed lube supplied by a buddy of mine.  777 likes regular lubes and doesn't need a great deal of it.  It burns so cleanly, that excessive lubes just gunk things up.
