Colt Light Rifle
« on: March 15, 2006, 02:20:10 AM »
Hello everyone.

I recently saw one of these at a gun shop in 7mm Rem Mag.  It was in real good condition, had a synthetic stock and the price seemed decent ($285.00) for a high power bolt action.

I'm not at all familiar with this model.  The only Colt bolt action I am familiar with are the old Sauer models.

Could someone tell me anything about these rifles?

Is the price in the ball park?

Many thanks.

I did a search and found out that they are manufactured in Maine and are apparently considered to be decent rifles.  I went back and looked at the gun and has Saco, Maine printed on the receiver.

I also checked a couple auction sights and from what the asking prices are, $285 seems to be a good price.  Now I have to decide if I need a 7mm Mag or should put the money toward something I would get more use out of.

I have one of the Colt Lightweights in .270 - great, easy to carry, accurate, hunting rifle - that is a good price.

Didn't colt buy out ultralight arms and just change that rifle to make the colt light rifle?  They make them in four caliber 30-06,270,7mag and 300win mag and had problems with the first run firing pin springs.   I don't think colt ever paid  Forbes for ulralight arms but anyway Forbes restarted that company under New  Ultra Light Arms.  www.gunsamerica.com has some new colt light  rifles for sale.

I heard that Forbes was so upset by what Colt did to the ultra light rifle that he began production again, that broke the no competition clause of his contract so Colt stopped payin' him.

That's a good price if it's in decent condition. The problem was witht he 06 and 270s not the magnums. Had one, didn't like the trigger pull.

I have a Colt Light in 300 Win. Mag. and its an excellent shooter after I replaced the trigger (Timney) and Melvin Forbes safety.
