Budget priced rifles

I have a friend who wants to get a rifle, and he is looking at either the Remington 710 or the Savage 110 combo rifle because they both come with scopes.  He doesn't have very much money to spend, and he wants to get a gun with a scope so he doesn't have to mess with mounting a scope.  I am a Ruger fan myself, so I am no help to him.

Which is a better gun, the 710 or the 110?  He will probably get it in either 7 mag or 30-06.

I personally think the Savage 110  :grin: is a MUCH better gun than the Remington 710 :cry:  and I would go with the .30-06 if it were me.

I can't say anything good or bad about the Remington but I've owned three Savage rifles (.223, 7mm-08, and a .270)  and all have been extremely accurate.

Forget the Remington 710 and get the Savage.  A MUCH better rifle.  Or get  a Stevens, still a much better rifle.

The barrel on the Rem 710 is press-fit into the receiver, the Savage and Stevens are threaded.

I concur with the above statement. Another gun to look at is the Stevens 200 bolt action, I've heard nothing but good things about them(outside of looks), and users say accuracy out of the box is phenominal.

Here is a new one in the mix, try the mossberg ATR, tested guns and great accuracy..... You get one from walmart with 30-06 or .270 for $244, buy a nice bushnell scope for $40, scoupe mounts and rings, that takes total to about $300 (which is same or less than the savage 110) AND you can tell him to speak to the sporting-goods managers from WALMART for a 10% dicsount on a "display model"...... 90% of the time they say "yes", so that drops the price of the gun to about $225

here is the gun Im telling you about, its a little higher on the internet but in the store I see them for $244

one more thing i forgot to add, remington 710 Is the ugliest bolt-action I have ever seen, I dunno how well it shoots, but, its just so damn ugly

Savage makes a good gun no doubt. Maybe have your buddy check out the pawn shops and such. Now is a great time to find bargins on used rifles.

You will most likely find a Savage Remington Winchester Ruger ect with a better scope and all it will need is a very good cleaning.

Savage or Stevens over the Remington, but don't overlook the Mossberg ATR. I have one in .270 and it shoots really good with inexpensive Winchester Power Points. Also have a Savage Model 11 in .308 bought as a package gun. Either will do the job.

I'm throwing my hat in for the Mossberg ATR.  There are several posts regarding this gun.  

I've had a .30-06 for a couple years now.  One of the best shooting rifles I've had out of the box. Mine love's 180gr bullets.  1" groups with Rem, Winchester and PMP.  I have a Tasco Golden Antler 3X9X40 with Leupold Rifleman rings and it comes with Weaver bases.  

I'll be getting one of the new short action models real soon.

Savage, Stevens and ofcourse mossberg atr. I have stevens and the mossy. Both very accurate.

I wanted a cheap range rifle to play with,and I went with the stevens in 25-06.It has been the most accurate rifle I have ever shot.Not alot to look at but it sure shoots well!!!!!I have heard good things about the atr as well but have never even seen one.The local gunstores are all but sold out of the stevens and that says alot about the popularity of this rifle!

The 710 remington is not a low frill 700, it is a defferant beast. The steven 200 is a plain jane 110 without the accu trigger, this a very good rifle.
 Otherwise find a use rifle, out here in Cheyenne 30.06 can been found pretty reasonable. Everybody seems to want a Big mag....

if it were me id just put back a little money back each month till i could buy a ruger...but if your buddy cant wait any longer i guess id go with the savage in 30-06. another place he could look is one of the online auction sites sometimes you can find some really good deals in there. my favorite is www.auctionarms.com. tell him to check it out!

pre 2005 models of Rem 710 had a plastic sleeve in the reciever, they changed that in 05- stay away from the pre 05's!  My step son is looking for a sucker to buy his, so he can buy a newer model! he says it shoots perfect, but the sleeve swells and it is hard to operate the bolt!

I haven't shot the Mossberg, but the Stevens is a great budget rifle.   Same dependable, accurate action as the Savage 110, but I caught mine on sale for $199 at Bass Pro.   Very light and accurate with an easily adjustable trigger.

I'm right with Pepaw on this one, go with the Stevens. It does not have a scope, but keep in mind on models which come with a scope, Wally World or whoever puts the least expensive piece of junk scope they and find on the rifle just to move it. You're buddy is going to be a whole lot better off buying the rifle and then scope, well, he needs to buy bases and rings too. Knew someone in Milan, N.M., who bought a cheap Savage with a scope on it in .30/06 and all it took was six shots before the scope broke. He still had to buy anohter scope. Good Luck. Tom Purdom
