Loads for FA41 please?
« on: March 10, 2006, 06:33:22 AM »
I have a new FA 41 silhouette model on the way.  I am not new to reloading and am looking for some proven loads.

I am thinking AA #9, Lil Gun, or VV N-110.

I will be using cast bullets, Winchester primers, and Starline brass.

I have some proven loads in my Ruger Blackhawk so will have a start.

If you are uncomfortable giving out specific loads, I can understand that.  You can email me info, or post minimum info to get me started.  I will work up to my load.

I cannot believe no one shoots an FA 41.

Do they suck or what?  Should I cancel my order?

You gave very little info for what you want, Is it a Model  83 or a 97?
What weight of cast bullet, and what profile; rnfp ,semi wad cutter, rn, Keith or what? All these questions need to be answered before recomendations can be made.

The 41 mag is a truely great choice for silhouet shooting, It can provide more than enough energy with the bigger bullet weights for the largest targets while doing so with a lot less recoil than the larger calibers. The cartidge is a great match in a Freedom Arms with your intended purpose in mind.

Heavy bullets are the ticket for Silhouette. The twist rate is designed with biggin's in mind. The BRP (RCBS) 270 or Leadheads 260 (NEI) run great over 17 H-110 or 16 N-110. One of the best heavy bullet shooters used 16 H-4227 behind the Leadheads 260. Has the trajectory of a mortar but he kicked ass with it! I never used a light bullet so can't help you there.
I just took a charging HD at 50 meters this weekend. The 270 stopped the SOB dead in its tracks!

Thanks for the replies.  Keep them coming.

I have an old Lyman swcgc mold that drops the bullets out at about 218.
I have talked with Veral Smith at LBT and he suggests his 250 gr WFN mold, but I need to do some barrel/cylinder slugging before he will confirm weight of bullet when cast.

I have lots of .41 bullets, probably 15 powders that will work, and about every brand of load manual.   I can come up with a recipes that will work.  Just hate to be making chocolate chip cookies in the loading room and then finding out the peanut butter cookies work much better in silhouette.

I need to know who has the good cookies.  Hate making wrong cookies with WCC coming up fast.  Ted Z will probably be back with that Octagon barreled "minute of half scale chicken" FA44.  I am sure Don Ritz will have his FA 44 there also.  Would hope to compete with them, or at least be close enough to keep them wondering.

Need to know if nuts or chips (jacketed or cast)
How big they should be (weight)
Brand of flour (powder)
And how good they taste (accuracy).

From there, I will come up with some recipes!!

Thanks again,

A load that works very well in my M83 41 consist of 225 Rnfp by sureshot bullets, 20 grains of Hogdon Lil'Gun powder, WW large pistol primer and reminton or starline cases, Starline grives a little higher velocity and slightly better accuracy. This load produces tight little cluster near and far for me, the down side to this load is the recoil factor, not to bad, but for a long match it might be a little much. just finishing load work up for a 250 gain cast bullet that is near identical with the 255 grain cast performane with a smaller metaplate, it is 73 %. I' working with Lil'Gun and H4227.
A good place to start with the long flat nose of LBT in that weight would be 17 grains  of Lil'gun or 18.5 grains of H4227 with the above componets.

I have a 6" M83 and have used the following:

255 and 265 CPBC hardcast with 22 grains of H110, WW LP primer and Winchester case....velocity is in the mid 1300s.

300 grain hard cast from Penn Bullets, Specialty Pistol Gear and BulletManDan over on AuctionArms.com with 19.0 grain of H110, WW LP primer and Winchester case....also runs mid 1300s.

Leadhead also has a 270 grain gascheck bullet that should be great for silhouetts....Bob
