i know a lot of people think the 270 is light for elk and i also know that many people use it to cleanly take elk every season i will be using this in my ruger ssl mod77 thanx,superdown

I would say if either one of these shoot real good out of your rifle they would be pretty good choices.

Barnes makes a 150 grain triple x bullet, I don't know if any one commercially loads it though. If you hand load, this would be a very good bullet to try out.

Load her up with FED PREMIUM 150gr PARTITIONS and go hunt.

I have seen the Winchester 150 grain Power Point load do well on several elk. Can't knock the federal load with the Partion either.

Seen three taken with basic 150 grain non premium bullets. Seemed to do the job just fine.

Just as a sidenote, don't let anyone tell you that the 270 is too light for elk. Guides I've been out with tell me that they'd prefer to have someone show up in camp with a gun the customer can shoot well rather than some big ol' thumper that is "enough gun" but which the customer can't shoot as well. The 270 will get the job done as long as the shooter can put the bullet in the right spot.

Good hunting ability, able to get close to game and make good shot placement. The difference from them old days is people had to get close to the game, where today most take longer distance shots and require different performances from the guns. Had Davy Crocket and Daniel Boone had today's gun's back then, history would be different. Could you imagine if Native Americans had AR 15 instead of a bows in them old days.

I have never hunted elk, so I don't have first-hand experience. However, a close friend of mine from Colorado has killed 5 elk (I've seen the photos) with a .270 Winchester--he grew up there. The .270 Winchester will do just fine. If it were me though, I'd handload my own ammunition w/ a Nosler Partitition or the new Accubond (which I've used on whitetail here in TX). The Hornady Light Magnum loads are excellent for factory ammunition.

Not sure Crockett or Boone ever killed an elk. Boones favorite rifle was an under 40 caliber muzzleloader, don't know about Crockett.

I used 150 gr. fusions last year and it worked Ok on a cow at 325 yards. I put an insurance shot in her but honestly I don't think it was neccisary.

I never tried to shoot a bow out of an AR-15, but I'm guessing it wouldn't work that well. :-D :-D :-D :-D

I grew up readin' Jack O'Connor's opinions about the .270. One of them was, why make a 7mm out of your .270 by puttin' 150 grain bullets in it? He thought the 130s were sufficient, and he didn't have all the super premiums to choose from. Just dumb ol' CoreLokts and Silvertips.
