firing shot in rifled barrel shotguns
« on: March 23, 2003, 04:39:28 PM »
can shotshells as well as slugs be fired through rifled barrel shotguns such as the nef tracker II slug gun?   I would like to use the firearm with slugs for deer and also with shot for grouse.

gunpilot,

The best advice I can give you is to pattern your shotgun.  Get a large sheet of paper, 30x30 inches or bigger, and fire a shot then go check and see if the shot pattern has holes in it big enough for the type of bird you want to hunt to fly through.  If it has holes too big get another shotgun.  Lawdog

Rifled Barrel = Spin/Twist

Shooting modern shotshells, which normally use a plastic "shot cup"/wad combo, in a rifled slug barrel would cause the shot cup to "spin" as it travels down the barrel. This would impart "centrifugal force" onto the shot and the shot cup causing it to fly outward from the centerline of the barrel as it leaves the barrel, which in turn would cause the pattern to open up considerably.... most likely making it a VERY POOR pattern to use on upland game like grouse. I believe in doing so, you would reinvent the term "scatter-gun" for your shotgun.

Considering the low cost of additional NEF barrels for your shotgun, it would be best to just send your gun it and have it fitted for the proper barrel and choke (modified) to use for grouse hunting.

I just looked up on gunbroker and you can buy a new Tracker II 12ga smooth bore for $129, I think that is a very good price.  The more the merry and you would have twins.
