12 BVSS Accurracy
« on: March 04, 2006, 06:01:56 PM »
Hi,
  I'm looking to buy my first Varmint rifle.  I'm considering a Savage 12 BVSS.  I know they shoot well.  I'm just curious what kind of groups you guys are getting, particularly in .22-250 and .223.

How do the lighter .223 bullets perform in the 1:9 twist barrels?

Thanks.

SeaBass,,the Savage has an a really good reputation for being accurate regardless of model from what I read before I bought mine.  I have the 10 FP in 223 and it shoots great.
So far the most accurate "inexpensive" ammo for my gun,,also 1 in 9 twist 24" heavy barrel has been the Federal American Eagle 50gr HP.  Used that for a zero point to compare all the reloads to.  I have reloaded some 40gr Vmax that grouped one inch using 25grs of 3031 although they shot 3 inches high and left of zero.
A friend has the 12 in a 204 and just shoots the heck out of the ghogs. I don't think you can be sorry with what ever caliber you decide on. But the availability of a lot of good name 223 ammo was a deciding factor for me.
I just started reloading mainly because I had so much brass accumulating.
Hope this helps, and good shooting.

SeaBass;

I just bought a Model 12BVSS in 243 Win. Man what a shooter. It shot great out of the box. I mean MOA and it's getting better the more I shoot it. Started out with 55 grainers then switched to 70gr bullets. I'm very well pleased with it, so much that I've ordered a Model 10FP in .223. And I shot one of those and it would shoot Win. White Box Value Pack 45 gr. into one ragged hole, the .223 that is.
Good Luck.

I've got a pre-accutrigger savage model 12 in .22-250 with plastic stock.  With the right factory ammo or handloads it will shoot 5 shot groups under 0.5" from 100 yards off the bench.  I can't shoot near that well from sitting or kneeling, and I blame the heavy, creepy trigger.

I wouldn't hesitate to get another model 12.  I'm particularly taken with the left-hand, low-profile 12 in .204 ruger with the laminated stock.  It's just a matter of time.

I bought one in .223 liked it so much I bought its big brother in .308.  I am now building a .300/.221 on a savage stainless singleshot action with accutrigger to drop in a choate varmint stock.

My .223 (that went to live at a friends house to finance the new build) would shoot its best groups with 52gr Sierra MK bullets pushed with 25.5 of Win. 748 and CCI Mag. Small rifle Primers.

Try It, You'll Like It.

I have this particular rifle in the .308 and i also can cover my groups with a dime. 5 Shot groups look like small 4 leaf clovers. Smallest to date is 5/16 of an inch. I would highly recommend the 12bvss in any caliber.  Thanks Ryan
