Rem. Mod. 700 BDL SS DM Magazine problem
« on: March 01, 2006, 05:44:29 PM »
I have a model 700 BDL SS DM in 308 Win.  Two of my four magazines have a similar problem.  One of the magazines is brand new and the other is like new.  The problem is that when I go to chamber the LAST round in the magazine, the base of the cartrige Pops up out of the magazine after I move the bolt forward just a half inch or so.  The rear of the cartridge usually ends up on top of the bolt and can fall free of the rifle if I dont catch it first.  Remington told me to take the rifle and mags to a Rem. qualified gunsmith.  Have any of you experienced this with your magazines?  Is there a quick, cheap fix- like bending the lips of the magazine in or out?  I'm willing to experiment a little before I spend time and money at the gunsmith.  Just thought I would ask around here first.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

This is the worst detachable magazine system I've ever seen, next to the older Browning BLR pot metal magazines. On both of my 700s with DM, I have issues with the bolt not catching the rounds AT ALL to chamber them, usually with the first round in the mag. One 700 did it on most all the rounds. The mag was hanging too far down at the back.....the stupid retention system is placed midway and acts as a fulcrum, with spring pressure forcing the back down making it hard to chamber rounds. Your case sounds like the opposite, and almost sounds like bad magazines or feed rails.  Good luck with Remington fixing anything right......I had one 700 back 4 or 5 times on a similar issue, and I paid most of the shipping. Do let us know how you resolve it.

I have the same gun in 7mm-08.  I have not had any problems with it, although I don't necessarily care for the design.

I think that the best DM design is from the original Browning A-Bolts.

Thanks for the replies.  I bent the right lip on the magazines in a "hair" and now they both work perfectly.
