I'm wondering what all would be involved in installing a barrel band for sling attachment. I see them listed in Midway USA and Brownells. From what I've read they are a specific diameter and one would have to file them to match the barrel's taper. Once that is done how are they secured to the barrel? I'm guessing solder of some kind. Is this something that is doable at home or should this be a smith install only?

I was just considering it on a custom rifle I'm putting together as a different look.

Ranger413: go to the Uncle Mike's website. They have 3/4 barrel bands you can install yourself if this is a lever action and they have other types of barrel bands you should be able to use. Most often if yougive the make and model of the rifle you want banded they will have what you want in stock. HTH. Mikey.

I stay away from slings attached with barrel bamds because they can deflect the barrel and change the point of impact depending on the amount of pressure placed on the sling.

As PaulS stated, use a barrel mounted sling attachment for a carry sling only. If you use the sling for tension while you shoot, your point of impact will change. That said, the barrel mounting setup for sling attachment does one great thing; it lowers the carry height for the end of your barrel making it much less prone to snagging limbs and brush.

Sweated on is the right way, but I have used J-B Weld with good results on rifles that were already blued. If the barrel diameter match is good, then the J-B Weld is invisable.

They make it a carry sling only, but do add a certain something to the appearance.
