ice thickness
« on: February 27, 2006, 02:47:01 PM »
just wondering how the ice thickness is shaping up in your area?  i have 15 inches in ontario canada but 12 inches of it is white ice and there is alot of slush so the ice isnt great.   also alot of snow on top of the slush preventing it from freezing.

so hows everyone elses ice?

Ice in southern Michigan is non-existant.   I wish we had some snow or at least low temps to get the deer moving, or so  I can ice fish after deer season ends on Jan. 1st.

Ice is still spotty in maine, where i live, some of the smaller waters have locked up but not the larger waters with most places opening on1/1 not sure how much safe ice there will be,I think poeple will have to fish like the old timers did and leave the toys at home- walk instead of driving, use a spud instead of a power auger, fish the smaller prickle, perch ponds until the big lakes lockup, hopefully this season will be better than last years-tt

hardly any ice hear,i live at about 1300' elevation here in northern ny.we are usually fishin' by CHRISTmas.i have heard of a few shallow bodies of water a little north of here with a some ice.we worked outside today on a deck,it was over 45 friggin degrees.i sure don't mind it for work but it isn't helping the fishin out much.supposed to be almost 50 on thursday.my pond has been frozen for while but i'll bet there is not over 2" on it.

I'll agree thank god for power augers, and also for the auger extension.  This was the view out front of the house a few weeks ago.  We would have to dig down, then set up the auger, get through the frozen overflow, and then to the ice.  Depending on the elevation we were going through about two feet of overflow and then 2 feet of ice down by sealevel and three in the mountains....

I've seen a couple of ponds with somebody on it. But, didn't look like too many are venturing out. Just read the local outdoor guy's column, and said that Lake Erie hasn't frooze over enough for the local guide's around the islands to do any good. Unless something drastically happens around here,NW Ohio, this year is pretty much shot. gypsyman

OTZ still is iced up, some overflow pools by shore, still a fair ammount of snow cover here, folks are catcheing some good sized sheefish during the day, the week of the 3rd-the 7th they really slay'd em, fish heads everywhere, ravins and seagulls having a ball, when I get off work its all pretty much done for the day.
will keep on though.

My kid wanted to leave her boots & ski pants on the snowmobile she said it was too hot................Does she look overheated???

The piles of snow behind are whats left of the OTZ-ORV-IAN ice road drifted in after our last blizzard, the bluffs in the background are part of the northern tip of Arctic Alaskas Baldwin Peninsula.

Mud puddles are slushing up, some the smaller sinkholes out on the tundra already have a thin glaze of ice.
Rime slush along the shores.
Alaska's Selawik river is iceing over, river folk are pulling boats for the winter.
Coast folk still in the water (seal hunting time)
