Author Topic: Smith and Wesson Front Sight (Read 1358 times)

I have an old model 57 nickle plated. The front sight has a plastic insert that just dried up and cracked and fell out. I called Smith and they said the gun had to be sent back to the factory to replace. (Around 50 bucks and 5-6 weeks) It looks like all that needs to be done is clean out small holes in sight and melt plastic in the front insert? I just don't know what type of plastic to use. Does anyone have any experience doing this?

With the dovetail slot already there, I think the kit to replace the plastic is still made? Search "Brownells" catalog or call them and ask?

I believe S.B. is correct in his response. Somewhere I have read in the past where this HAS been done by a hand gun owner and a pin sized Dab of super glue was used to hold it in place once the new one was installed. Keep us posted on the progress of this repair as well we all like to learn, and if you feel uncomfortable I would Think a gun smith could do this for a small fee rather than going through the "cost and hassle" of shipping it back to the factory.. I also have a red ramp sight on my model 57 Nickel revolver and have thought of having it replaced with the new pinned in sight that S&W now uses as I am not in LOVE with a red ramp, actually HATE it. This is another avenue you could explore if you do not like the red ramp and I will provide a link to a custom gun shop that does super work and also supplies S&W with all there replacement Mcgivern gold dot style sight's, that they sell. He has a neat picture display of this process in his web site as well, worth checking out. He answers all your questions when E-mailed and I have seen his work and it is flawless.I have bought a few of his Mcgivern gold bead sights and they are very effective and made of real gold at a modest cost for the effect & performance they give to a revolver. :cb2: Since I had planned to use mine as a trail/travel gun, I had night sights put on my 57. Ya never know what might go "Grrrrrrrrr . . ." in the night! And then thar's them two legged varmints that come out at nite!

Thanks for the info. I called Brownells and they told me that they don't have anything yet for the front sight insets however, call back in two weeks and that they will have a solution. I will let you know what happens in a couple of weeks. As far as night sights, this gun keeps coming back to me. I have sold it 3 times and bought it back for the same price when the buyers needed money. Once "fixed" it will probably sit in the safe forever.

use the little redstick from those small cheese and crackers packs. works like a charm, cheap as dirt...
