I'm not an archery hunter but have shot a bow a little. Got a question that sound's foolish to me. Read where some guy wanted to know what broadhead to use, for what I don't recall. Said he just needed the broadhead because he was good to 70 yds. Can those thing's really be used competently at 70 yds?

Actually, that "guy" will do more damage to himself, by what he says, than by his shootin! I've even heard guys say that they can shoot game, with a rifle, at a thousand yards, and I think that they expect to be believed, also.
To answer your question, NO! Bowhunting is a 20 yd. game. Any further is determined by the shooter, and his experience. Since you've done a little shootin with a bow, at what range can you reliably hit a softball, under field conditions? Like uneven footing, low light, fatigue, ect. Don't like a softball? OK, try a soccer ball, or a balloon. Tie out a dozen balloons, and shoot em. No problem, right?

I only know of one person that could possibly shoot 70 yards with a traditional bow. BUT, his own personal traditional hunting distance is 18 yards. Shooting 70 yards would be irresponsible for most compound shooters too. At that distance even if you could hit the animal, the KE of the arrow would be surly be lacking.

The majority of traditional shooters I know wouldn't take a shot at those distances at a live animal..mostly at tournaments at live sized targets.but I know several compound shooters and crossbowmen who have varmint/coyote hunted at those ranges and do quite well at it..

Didn't Ted Nugent claim to have made a 100 yard kill (with a compound, though)? I remember there was quite a stink that it wasn't ethical (agreed) with his defenders claiming he had so much practice and was so good, that in his case it was okay.

Hey fellas:
No problem! 70 yds.? 100 yds.? Just go to a grass field, something easy on the arrows. Set out some nice white gallon milk jugs, pace it off and have at it! The results will say it all!
I can tell anyone with complete truthfullness that I have done so, and it's no problem at all shooting at that distance. I can miss just as easily at 70 yds. as I can at 100 yds. I can miss a lot closer than that too! And that's without sights! Woodbutcher

As far as the Nugent thing, If I recall, (I'm going on memory here on the video I saw) he did shoot or claim to shoot at about 100yds. I believe it was an exotic and he took the shot at a already wounded animal. So I guess he basically messed up the first shot and didnt really have nothing to lose. He made the hit by the way and got the beast. I might add, that he said he did it, you dont actually see the shot only the hit. Finally, yes go out to a field and try it, if you think your good at it, go out the next day and try again, sooner (I hope) or later you'll notice how inconsistant you really are. Its great fun, but please don't do it on live unwounded game, they deserve better. CRASH87

Can recurves be used competently at 70 yds? Yes. If you don' think so just watch the Olympics in 2008. They shoot at 70 meters.

I used to shoot at 90 meters at the club FITA range all the time, with my longbow. Always waited till the grass was mowed behind the bales so the arrows were easier to find.
I saw one o' them Olympic recurves once. They're works of art! Noticed there were a few things different from my longbow. Arrows were a bit different, too. Beautiful, looked like big knitting needles.
I believe the sights on that thing cost more than my bow, arrows with it!

Well you guy's pretty well conferm what I thought. I said I've shot a bow a little. You could keep the ballon's woodbutcher, I'ed need the Goodyear blimp. That's why I don't bow hunt!

Dear Don:
Hang in there! While I realize that it's a matter of personal desire, you are quite capable of going after a bottle cap at 40 yards, with traditional equipment. Note, I didn't say me, I said you. I can't hit that well that far, but I can sure scare it real bad! At 20 yds. that bottle cap is in trouble! Not every shot, but enough to be interesting. This is because you have an aiming point to focus on.
Problem is, a deer is a blob to aim at, soft color, drab background, poor light, tough to get a focus point. Ground hogs are a lot tougher! If you're close enough, you can pick a spot, a patch of hair, or a point at the elbow. Somewhere around 20 yards, I'm at my limit. ( Closer if I had my druthers! )If the critters only had a nice bright orange price sticker on the right spot, it would be easier.
Compound shooters and Olympic shooters are using sights, and nice bright targets, different game entirely.
Given the desire, with the right equipment, and a little time stump shootin, you'd be fine. A little good coaching, from some one who really knew, would help. You'd bust any balloon you wanted to! Woodbutcher

Animals have a disturbing tendency to move before arrows get there...70 yds makes it far more likely, even if skill is a given, to have it happen...

I can shoot 70 yards consistently with my long bow. Coincidentally, I have a 30 inch draw shooting a 31 inch arrow pulling sixty nine pounds and shooting at 207 feet per second gives me "point on" at seventy yards, and I can hit a 3 foot by 3 foot target each and every time. If you think that's good enough for hunting you must be going after mastodons, cause that's definitely not good enough for deer.

Maybe he means 70 feet.
