how do yall like the mossberg 835
« on: February 24, 2006, 04:33:31 PM »
My dad has a 835 turkey gun with the ported barrel, camo. I love this gun, it's one of my favorites its fun to shoot feels great, not to heavy, it is a great squirrel gun(of course I put a full choke instead of that beast extra full choke, plus I can use steel shot instead of lead, always a plus  )

any comments welcome

i have a 835,realtree camo,my barrel is not ported though,i think that came out after i bought mine.mine came with 5 choke tubes,2 for steel shot,3 for lead which are the only ones i have ever used, the  full choke is good for squirrel hunting, the modified tube is great for rabbit and grouse,i was never satisfied with the extra full choke that came with mine for turkey hunting,so i bought a colonial arms  ported choke tube, not sure what constriction it is,but it makes a much better pattern with 3 1/2" shells at 40 yards than the factory tube.the only fault i have with mine is it 'misfires' sometimes(just started doing this 2 years ago and only with winchester HV shells),which did cause me to lose a nice gobbler last spring.i first thought it was winchester ammo, but i sent some shells back to winchester for them to check, and they told me it was a light firing pin strike.i am currently trying to send mine back to mossberg for repair,as soon as i figure out how to ship it.i still like my 835,their great guns!!

his mossberg only came with the extra full choke, which was no problem because another choke tube only costs like $13.00

is yours a ulti-mag?(i am pretty sure thats the modle) also does yours have fiber optic sights?

One of my dads friends shot a turkey last year(twice) with a 12 ga. and the turkey just ran down the hill and flew so he ordered a 10 ga. semi auto   (which is a beast) and is gonna use that for turkey.

I have heard that sometimes they will bind up with 3 1/2 shells, but I haven't shot them so I dont know if it is true or not.

you get what you pay for with mossberg.  Get a browning or remmington instead.

yes you do get what you pay for but...

I own 2 remingtons  both are 870's one a 20ga. one a 12ga. they are good guns but I think that the mossberg has a bit less wobble in the pump than the remingtons

I think that the mossbergs and remingtons are in the same class and I think I might have to choose the mossberg over the remington(but not by much)

I think mossbergs are great guns I have their 500 model in .410 havent used it in a while but it is a very sturdy and durable gun and it shoots great.

as for the browning love to have one but a bit to pricy :-)

BUT BOTH REMINGTON AND MOSSBERG ARE GREAT GUNS!!!!

OH also my dads is also very smooth but I have heard that sometines the 3 1/2" tend to stick in the chamber.. i have never shot 3 1/2" but I dont think I will need to any time soon.

also do you ever load it up all of the way and just empty it in like 5 seconds   very fun just blowing stuff up with a shotgun :biggun:

For a turkey gun I'd probably get a Mossy, but their guns just don't feel right to me for swinging on a fast moving grouse or pheasant for that purpose I'd get a Remington or Winchester.

i have had 2  hated both. the first one would never group and after 4 different brands of turkey chokes and every size shot and brand you can buy my dealer sent it back and it had some kind of bur that was ripping the shot cup. dealer gave me another one this one ported seamed longer in the length of pull and comparing it to my buddies it was. also the porting did not seem to help these babies kill on both ends. my buddie broke his collar bone with his shooting streight up at a goose. the net time after missing a turkey and 3 rounds latter he had a bloody lip and bent glasses. the cammo finish wore off badly as well. so i went for a bretta extrema and never looked back. yes you do get what you pay for.

I just sold my 835 ulti mag. It was OK for me for pass-shooting doves...Never hunted geese with it, but I'm sure it would be good for that too. The gun was way too long and cumbersome though for jumping pheasants and quail though. Sold it to make room (and money) for a new CZ Bobwhite side by side. Hope this don't get my reply kicked out, but I have a skeet choke tube for the 835 I need to get rid of if you're interested.
