Ruger Bearcat Questions
« on: March 22, 2003, 02:53:30 AM »
I've never handled, let alone shot a Bearcat but it looks like a fun little gun. What are people's general opinins of the Bearcat? Can you put adjustable sights on it? If so, how hard is it to do so?

Thanks,
Catskillgirl

Welcome! We need more ladies (I hope you're not offended by the term; one never knows, nowadays) in the shooting sports.
I assume that you have hands that are small, compared to a male's; most women do. In other words, about the size of mine (Awright, you guys; stop laffin'!), which leads me to say that a Bearcat would probably fit you pretty well. Bill Ruger had hands like catcher's mitts, so his guns are kinda full in the grips. I found that a Single-Six, years ago, fit me pretty well, too, and you can get it with adjustable sights (Super Single-Six, if memory serves) and also with an extra cylinder for .22WMR (Super Single-Six Convertible), although you will get arguments about the ability of that last one to shoot accurately. Back when I had one, it was a problem getting the .22WMR to shoot AT ALL. I understand the quality of the ammo has improved since then; I used to have to take several whacks at a cartridge before I hit some primer.
I think I'd hie me to my local gunshop to check up on both; if they don't have both in stock, hunt around for someone who does; you've gotta hold them in your hand to know how they'll feel.
After you've bought one, come back here to find out how to keep it from shooting left.
I ain't paranoid but every so often, I spin around real quick.--just in case

welcome to the forum I know that any women thats is interested in guns must already be married   you wont do wrong with either a single six or a bearcat. Both are sweet shooting little guns. The single six convertable would be a little more practical. Ajustable sights and the option of shooting mags. Mine is extreemly accurate with both when ammo it likes are used.  Just let me know if any of the other guys on here give you a bad time. There all terrible and luckily im not :)

Charlie:  I wouldn't worry about offending Catskillgirl by calling her a lady...Just don't tell her she can't shoot the magnums as well as any man...That'll really get her mad.

Lloyd:  She's not married, but is taken...(Sorry, I just had to brag  )

I have a newer Bearcat and love it!  It has no need of adjustable sights and shoots everything I've fed it pretty much to the same point of aim!  I've taken numerous squirrels with it while I was hunting with my various muzzleloaders and a bushytail would venture too close for the rifles and shotguns.

Katterskill Girl., The Ruger Bearcat is  sweet little gun just the way it is. I had an original that was accurate. I had no use for Adj. sights.  P.S. I used to hunt  the Catskills starting back in 1949 .Best time of my life. Horsefeathers.

I bought a new model Bearcat about five years ago. They are great little guns. I had intended for it to be my daughter's gun, but I've shot it a lot more than she has. It is always on my belt during hunting season (when it's legal of course). It shoots great with any brand of ammo, and the sights are good just as they are.

I think the original ones had brass frames. The new ones are steel. It adds a bit of weight, but you can still carry one all day and forget it's there. If you looked up "handy gun" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of a Bearcat.

OLD MODEL WERE ALUMINUM, EXCEPT FOR SUPER BEARCATS WHICH WERE STEEL FRAMED. NEW MODELS ARE STEEL FRAMED. BOTH ARE BEAUTIFUL SHOOTING GUNS.  YOU COULD ADD ADJUSTABLE SIGHTS BUT MINE HAVE ALWAYS SHOT FINE WITHOUT.
if you need to add politically to the word correct, it isn't!

My .22 Bearcat is Serial # F97X.  My father-in-law gave it to me in '81.  While grouse hunting down in Mio one day a friend said it looked like a gun that couldn't hit the barn...I pulled it out of the holster aimed up at a branch 30 feet away and up about 15 feet an proceeded to notch a branch that was a 1/2 inch in diameter!  Great gun, and use it all the time on the trap line here on the west end of the U.P.

I just checked the Ruger site...it was made in 1959, the second year of production!  Woo-Hoo! :-D

I have both a recent blued Bearcat and stainless Single Six. The Single Six has a full size grip and adjustable sights, and a slightly longer sight radius making it a little easier to hit with. The Bearcat is still amazingly accurate for such a little gun. I would like to get a Bearcat in stainless, but in MD that isn't possible for the moment.
