?'s for someone that knows the Browning A5...
« on: February 23, 2006, 05:24:28 PM »
Ijust got a Browning A5,  basically a bunch of parts.  Just about everything is there except the barrel.

Oh yeah, I am going to need a barrel - anyone need a kidney?  Hmm, buy a barrel or pay the mortgage this month!

The reciever is Belgian, and when I get the thing in front of me I should know better about date of manufactur and such.  What I need to know is what to look for in a replacement barrel?

There is the Light 12, Standard, and Magnum.  Some are 3" and others are chambered for 2-3/4" shells.  Are any of them interchangeable?  Are there differences in the receivers of these models.

I see some of the Belgian made barrels won't handle steel shot.

Sure do appreciate anyone that can point me in the right direction.

most Belgian barrels ae not steel proofed, if you want to use steel get a Japanese made barrel or a hastings. lightweight and standard barrels are interchangale on a standard reciever, but you can't put a magnum barrel on a non magnum reciever and vice versa. you will be able to figure out what the reciever is by the serial number, the few mag A5's i've seen have Magnum engraved on the left side of the receiver

OK What I have coming is the Light Twelve receiver.  Can i put a standard barrel on it, or does it have to be a Light Twelve barrel?  I am going to be on the lookout for the light barrel, but they seem few and far between compared to standard barrels.

What about wood?  Is it interchangeable, I would imagine so?

as far as i know yes, you can put a standard barrel on  light twelve receiver. as for wood, i do beleive the butt stocks are the same for the mag a 2 3/4 models,  but the forearms are not. i'd just a new set from Boyds, rather then search for an undamaged original

Kevin has given you some good info. Midwest gunworks also has a lot of wood for A5's, and have decent prices for what you get.

But if ya dont want to mess with it, just give me a shout.
