? on hook buttplates
« on: February 23, 2006, 02:49:24 PM »
'Figured this would be where the shuetzeners are.
Back-ground; I have a low-wall on which the buttstock has been shortened rather much, for a youth team, I suppose.
I've been thinking of making a thick, aluminum buttplate (like a Mowrey) to lengthen it.  While I'm at it, I thought, why not a hook butt?
So, some such have a hook on top only, some on bottom only and some on top and bottom.
Question; the purpose or advantage of the different styles?

IIRC & in theory, the hooked butt plate works in conjunction w/ the perch belly butt stock to hold the rifle closer & tighter to chest to give a more repeatable & consistent hold. I think a double or a single hook depends upon the Shooter's physique & what he/she most comfortable w/.

You might also ask this question over the Amer. Single Shot rifle Association board.  They are mostly Schuetzen shooters there:

Or, try the Wyoming Schuetzen Union:
