Savage vs Tikka?

I'm thinking of using something a little lighter than my .270 next deer season.  first choices so far are either the Savage model 14 or the Tikka T3 Hunter.

.243 Win is first choice for caliber, but any suggestions would be welcome...

After all I read about them I tried the 7mm08 last year on whitetails.  Performed excellent and their is a great range of 7mm bullets to choose from(if you reload).  I like the heavier bullet for deer.  As far the rifle, both are very accurate, but the savage will be cheaper.  If you go with the savage I would spend a little more and get the accu-trigger.  I stevens 25.06 that shoots well but the trigger is not my favorite.  Good luck.

The Tikka has a better stock, action, bolt, trigger safety, and barrel.  Other than that...

There really is no comparison.  It's not even apples to oranges.  More like Caviar vs. Chef Boy Ardee.

You can compare Savage to Stevens, or even a Remington 710, (not the 700), but no way can you compare it to a Tikka.

The flood gates to Savage die hards has opened.... :)

Here is a group I shot last week at 200 YARDS with a savage,stevens 200 chambered in 25-06.Nice little rifle that shoots great..Adjustable trigger and a heck of an ugly stock that I painted.The 25-06 should be a nice deer round and with accuracy like this I am impressed to say the least!!!

That's an incredible group butler. Hand loads I see. What will it do with fact loads? Or are you one of those "load snobs" that refuses to use the factory rubbish...  :-D  LOL

I'm thinking of getting a stevens or savage in .25-06. I hear all kinds of wonderful stories about them in that caliber. I want to get groups like that but I'm not sure I want to get into handloading.

I do not think I would call myself a load snob,never heard that before.I have not shot any factory ammo out of it,bought brass and dies at time of purchase but I have got great groups at 100 yards with pretty much any load and powder.Did not do too much load development,just wanted to see what kind of velocity I would get with the 22 inch barrel,and was impressed.I do not much care for the bluing on this rifle,I disliked the look of the stock,and  do not like the three position safety,used to 2 on my browning and cz's.I really do like the accuracy out of it and have a lot more respect for savage products if this is their bottom end gun and it shoots better than some very expensive guns that I have seen.The trigger was quite easy to adjust as well.I do not see many tikkas here,but do see some very nice sako's.Good rifles as well!

Savage makes some great american made rifles.  Even there bottem line rifles shoot great. On the same hand Tikkas shoot pretty good to.

SAVAGE RULES!!!!! I am a pround American I only buy American products IF their is a choice. Some things are only availible from over seas though. I don't consider these nessecities.

Buy the Savage and put the money you save towards a new scope, or more ammo.......................or something for your wife to prevent retaliatory spending.

I have 5 good shooting Savages.  I have shot a friends Tikka T3 lite.  An ultra light 338 mag is no fun, but it shoots well until post concussion syndrome sets in.  That action is super smooth, and the plastic detatchable magazine is very solid.  Too much money for me.

I currently have 8 Savages and 4 Tikkas in the safe, but neither of the models that you mentioned as being interested in. I have handled both models in .308 during a stop at Gander Mountain while traveling. Personally, I like the feel of the Savage 14 better than the Tikka T3. I suggest that you try and handle both rifles and pick the on that fits and feels better to you. IIRC the price difference between the 2 wasn't that much. I also agree about choosing the 7MM-08 over the .243 Win.
