Ordered a 17 Jet last week
« on: February 21, 2006, 10:49:11 PM »
I had a 17 HMR for my T/C Contender and decied this wasnt the 17 i wanted so i looked around and found that a company that builds custom barrels for my gun (Bullberry) had a 17 Jet listed. This is made from necking a 22 jet mag. down to 17 cal. then fireforming it to blow the case out almost strait up to the new shoulder which will be 32 degree. Claims are out of a 24 inch barrel it will easily push a 25 gr. bullit over 4000 fps and a 20 gr. 4300 plus. will i have been shooting my contender as a handgun so i figured that i would go with a 16.25" barrel and be able to shoot it as a pistol off a bipod or install the buttstock and use as a short carbine . I figure with this short barrel i should get around 3700 out of the 25 gr. and about 3900 out of the 20 gr. should make a great groundhog/crow gun and maybe a good coyote rifle under 200 yards.  Sorry so long just wanted to tell someone about new gun

Sounds like a clone of my 17 Remington.  Larry

I'm really, really not going to believe that they are going to get 4000 FPS from the .17 Jet, not unless what they are calling the "Jet Mag" case is a maximum, and not the more commonly mag case. Not with staying in the pressure spec for the brass. Either a bit of mis-information or mis-typeing has occured here.

I'm not familiar with either the 22 jet mag nor the 17 jet.  What's the parent case?

VC,

The .22 Jet is based on the .357 Mag with a VERY long shoulder. It was originaly made for the S&W Mdl 53 revolver but never really took off due to various problems. It makes a fine candadite for the T/C we have one here and it is a 1 holer. We also make ammunition for the .22 Jet.

Next up came the obvious blowing out of the case and resembles the .256 Win Mag, it was called the .22 Jet Max. Now enters the problem, the .357 Max has also been necked down and the obvious choice for the name would be the .22 Max, or .22 Jet Max. Capacity wise the .357 Max necked to .22 is very close to the .222 Mag and could very well be called the .222 mag rimmed. If you have been quote 4300FPS with a 20g bullet I would highly suspect that the case is based on the .357 MAx rather than the .357 Mag. I could be wrong, but I'd check before you buy the barrel so you know what equipment you will need, and you may have a less expensive option going with a standard .17 Rem (based on the .223 case necked down to .17 with a long neck). The .17 Rem is slightly overbore for the .17 cal but it is mainstream caliber and data is widely available. The other most popular and much more efficent (although slightly slower by about 100-200FPS) is the .17 Mach IV which is based on a .221 Rem fireball necked and blown.

I have yet to recieve my new barrel in 17 Jet, it should be here in the next 4-6 weeks.  I did find the info where i read the 4000+ fps though, here is a link to the artical.

P.S.  if you look around on that website you will find more info on the 17 Jet.

In fact I had it twice. Got them from Bullberry also. Before I ordered it, I corresponded with Dick Saunders, who did a lot of experimentation with the .17 calibers, and from what I recall, he originally started with a 40 degree shoulder, and later went to a 32 degree shoulder, and actually gained velocity! Seems like the little 17 Jet(or Super Jet, Saunders Jet etc) is a hot little round. Another hot round that went even faster was the 14-221 Walker! I had 11 grain solid copper machined .14 cal bullets from Eigleburger, and they were going 4500+! Almost went with a 10 caliber too, but had enough problems seating them tiny 14 caliber bullets! You'll have fun with that .17 Jet, especially with more .17 bullets available now days.

Considering the source, then I'll likely stand corrected.

Going from a 40 degree to a 32 degree and gaining velocity for the same load is exactly what you would expect, although it is a very small change you are reducing the capacity, thus if the charge weight is kept constant the the pressure and velocity will also increase.

Good shooting, careful of the sting, once you start with one sub-caliber, you are going to want a lot more. And then you want to design, and then..... Well you know how it goes.

If you can get Dick Saunders 17 book, or maybe even call him himself, you will learn a lot on how he got so much out of a little case.

Dear Reed,
I built one of the Saunders Jets many years ago for my daughter on a Martini Cadet action with a Shilen barrel and a Koa stock set. It got darn near the 4000 mark with a 22.5 in barrel and loading Data from Dick Saunders. The only limiting factor was the action. If I had used a Ruger #1 or 3 I might [?] have been able to get more with a slightly longer barrel but weight was the issue. Pretty potent cartridge and I think I still have the reamer!! HMMM also have another Shilen barrel HMMMMM !! Now to find a Ruger #1.

Aloha, Mark
