On the left side of this picture taken on the HMS Victory is what looks like a rammer with a spounge on it made with a big piece of rope between the two. What was this used for? I havent seen one of these before.

It is a rammer & sponge using a rope instead of a wood staff to make it easier to perform those duties because of the cramped quarters.  It must of worked or they wouldn't have used them.

Thanks Norm! I've seen these in other older pictures of Naval Cannons. Looks like a PITA, to me. I might have to build one for an up coming project to see how they work.

Also looks like it wouldn't be as likely to go over the side. If you drop the pole it's just a bare  pole but that looks long enough that some stays inboard and therefore stays aboard.

Gday to you all..!!! .....I cant seem to figure it out ..doesnt compute in my brain..........how can a limp rope work as a rammer ..??

It doesn't!
You use a plain rod to insert the tool and pull it out with the rope!
In the confined spaces (there isn't really enough room to stand up) anything that reduces the number of long opjects you must use seems good!
