Save rifle weight and get faster bolt throw with the short action .308 or even better ( less recoil ) 7mm08.

Since all these calibers will perform the same at 200 yards I would base my decision on economics, personal convenience and ammo availability. These considerations name the 308 specifically. Since it is a military round, surplus ammo is cheap and plentiful. The 308 also fits the short action rifles.  The other caliber choices do not offer as much as the 308.

There is one caliber that nobody has mentioned that will work well within the specified 80 - 200 yard range. It does not kick much, is available anywhere they sell amunition, and is more of a classic than the 06. The 30 -30.

:D  I have used all three and overall the 06 is still king. I just bought a Custom Eddystone Enfield in 06, will have another Remington 7600 in 270 and the same rifle in 06. If deer only 270 if say elk or Moose 06. Either way u can't go wrong . Jess

Well, I just shop around for the lowest priced Remington 700 I could find in any of those calibers.  All great deer rounds.

Where would the 25-06 fit into this discussion? I am thinking about buying one of these rifles  (H&R SB2-806 ULTRA HUNTER 2506 26IN LAM)

You can not go wrong with either choice. The 30-06 gives you more versatility being able to get factory ammo from light to heavy loads, the .270 has mild recoil while still getting the job done. The .280 is a good caliber also.

Hi Stomp,  the 2506 is GOOD not much different than the 270 when you compare the 2506/120gr with 270/130.
I've used one a little bit but like the 257 Roberts/117gr better :D

Don't overlook the 7mm-08.  From my experience, it's been extremely accurate out to 200 yards.  Haven't fiddled around any further than that.

The Three Sisters are 270, 280. 30.06    The Cousins  260, 7mm08 308
 
 Get the 280. IF you reload it is everything that the 7mm Remington mag claims to be.  More power than the 7-o8.
For hunting there really is no advantage of the Short action over the long.
 Plus you won't have to worry about hunting buddies bumming ammo off of you.

I used all the ones you are considering; they are all excellent rounds; however, after 45 years of hunting my choice today is a 7-08. It is mild recoil and deadly accurate and I've never had a deer make it more than 25 yards; practice on becoming an accurate shooter and don't get so caught up in calibers

Personally I think the .270 will fit you well..I have all three calibers mentioned and I still grab the .270...If your hunting class 3 animals theres better calibers then those mentioned..like the .338mag.

Now if your gonna reload I'd sujest looking at a .35 whelen..remington offers this caliber in there 700 CDL
I think the .260-7m08 and the .280 fill a need that never existed and the'll soon fade away....nothing personal.

I agree. I have used them all for years, and there are no bad choices in your selection, especially if you are hunting only deer.  If bigger game hunting is in your future the 30-06 may have an advantage, but not by much, simply for it's ability to handle heavier bullets.
