Looking for a deer rifle, thinking in remington 700, range 80 to 200 yards; but dont know if 3006, 308 or 270?
Help my guys, what do you think?

Given those choices, I would probably go with the .308. It gives you a good selection of factory ammunition, a lot of versatility if you reload, and has plenty of ummph for whitetails at 80 -200 yards. But truthfully, any of them would make great choices!!

I gotta go with the .308 on this one. They're all great calibers, but all basically the same at those ranges. (I know I stepped in it with that statement....

)

150Gr. Remington Corelokts. Used em for 10 years and work great. Less recoil than the other two. Significantly less than the ol '06.

ANY of the 3 = great for anything under 200 yards....

My picks for the 3 if hunting deer sized game =
1)270
2)308 or '06 (they are pretty much the same)

my pick for the 3 if hunting something little bigger (example elk)
1) '06
2)270
3)308

But seriously, to put them on a scale, lets say the '06 is a 10, then the 270 or the 308 are like 9.999999 (ALMOST a 10), they are idential in knockdown power / accuracy for shots under 200 yards.

To make your choice a little easier, Go with the one that has the cheapest ammo, like the 30-06 (I buy softpoints remington 180 gr from walmart for $12.50), Gander sells a tint of .308 not sure how manny rounds, but they are 150 gr FMJ primarly for practise for 65$ (I think there is like 200 rounds in the tint)..... now .270 ammo is the most expensive one of the 3, a box of them is usually around 20-24$

IMO, Those two calibers would be the best match to the range and game animal. I'd prefer the .308, but there's nothing wrong with a 7mm08 for that either.

My preference for 150 yards or more would be .30-06, although a .270 would also be a good choice out that far and farther.

If there is a chance that a 50 yard shot could be possible, then short action would definitely be the call.

200 yards and deer? Anything between a .25-06 and a .300 Win Mag will work fine. As will the .338 Federal, .35 Whelen and ...

In the future if you want to hunt some game bigger than deer I would opt for the old reliable 30-06. Tremendous bullet selection if your a handloador and readily available factory ammo at any backwoods gun shop.

Besides, its the 30-06's birthday.

I like the 308 myself but you can find '06 shells in any one-horse town hardware store in a pinch(I've been in a store in such a town that that's all they carried). So if I hunted far from the nearest Wally World I'd probably go with the '06 just in case.

Right next to the 30/06 shells in the one- horse town will be the 270 shells. In a two-horse town the 308's will be there too.

Pick any one of the three you can't go wrong.

What are the chances you might want to go elk hunting or caribou hunting some day in the future? If that is a possibility, get the '06. It is the best choice of the three if you ever go after bigger game.

i saw a Model 700 ADL Synthetic at a wal mart today in .270 for $299 --- because approx' 1000 Wal Mart locations are going to discontinue firearm sales. they will sell whatever they have by the end of March '06 at those stores and truck the rest of them to a warehouse to go to those Wal Marts that are a better area/market for them. i was told this by a manager in the store on the west side of cleveland, ohio.

i'd buy either the .270 or the .30-06 at that price for deer, black bear, elk, and moose. with proper bullets and proper shot location you will do just fine.

wal mart had some Winchesters also at the same price -- but i'm nowhere near a winchester 'wssm' caliber fan.

If you can get a copy of Handloader Ammunition Reloading Journal feb 2006 issue ,they have a great write up on the great 308, page 50 to57, if the .300 winchester magnum is rated as a 500 yard elk the .308 is a least a 350 yard elk cartridge, cheaper to shoot and not as punishing as the.300, also there is a statement thatBob Nosler makes about the .308-its inherent accuracy. I fancy the .308 because I reload and shoot a lot, but you cant go wrong with the .30-06 if your not going to be shooting 50 to 150 rounds in a shooting session.

30-06 is the only choice. Ammo can be bought anywhere and if you want to shoot smaller rounds you can. 220gr rounds will take grizzly if you really want to hunt them.

i'd rather work with the .308, too, more than the .30-06....though it's not as powerful. however, the wal marts don't stock too many .308's..........so you can't plan on finding a .308 too readily at $299 on a clearance.

the .270 is light on the recoil and is actually an equal to the .308 in most respects. not all, but certainly in most.....

At the ranges you have 80 - 200 there is not much of a difference but since it 2006 what would be better then to buy a ought six to ring in its 100 th birthday. Not much more I can add thats not been said. Good luck and enjoy what ever one you get

You can also get a 30-06 rifle, buy a .308 converter for like $25 bux, that way you can shoot .308 AND 30-06 from the same rifle

they are like triplets, each has their quirks and each have the goods! other than game hunted and ammo selection, there is'nt a lot of diff, I own 2 - 760 gamemasters, 1 in 06 & 1 in 270, I use 90 gr hornady in the 270 and 125gr in the 06! now if I were going for bigger game than whitetail I'd diff. upgrade the bullet! just remember it's the 1st shot that counts and most times a 2nd is'nt needed!!!!!!!

I have killed deer with both the -06 and 308. Both performed flawlessly. I have yet to do it with a 270, but that won't last long as my new Model 70 will take my share this coming season.
Any and or, these 3 are some of the Elite cartridges that have proven their worth time and time again, if not on the battlefield (270) then all around the world with most excellent sucess. Take your pick.

All 3 would work for you....so..go for the 30-06 or the 270..both would be my choices....and since it is the aniversary of the 30-06..go for it..what the heck :toast:

It's more important to find a rifle you love then get hung up on caliber. Anything from 243 on up will cleanly kill deer. So will my 357 carbine out to 100+ yards. What's important is what you can shoot well if you can shoot a 243 or 7-08 better due to the reduced recoil then thats what you should be shooting. In the past I've had 30-06, 270 and 308 the only one I miss is the 270 Win. model 70 I had back in the 70's. The 270 is a great caliber but thats not what I miss, the rifle just fit me like a glove and I could shoot it better then any rifle I've ever owned.

Most of the time on deer sized game you wouldn't notice any differece between the three.
