RB 500 S&W
« on: February 09, 2006, 04:16:04 PM »
O.K. now, has anybody been shooting the 500 S$W 6" RB yet?
If you have been how about a little report on it, Is it holding up? and what kind of loads have you been using? How many rounds through it, what weight bullet and velocities? you know the drill.
The reports on the 454 casull has about made me too squemish to buy one without shooting one and hearing about them first.
I have shot the 4"S$W enough to know I want one, But how is the Taurus holding up?
Thanks Halfbreed

Heck, I havn't even seen one in person yet..
What bad reports have you been hearing about 454 RB's? If you are talking about the thread ratgunner started a while back, I am not saying it is not true, but it sure smelled kinda fishy to me, coming from an admited ruger guy??.... :D

Dirty Harry, I have not seen one either, I have read several threads on GB here that the RB's are not holdiong up too well with the heavy 454 loads. Supposedly the 480 is doing fine though, much less pressure charges. That is what I was going by.

I saw those posts about the RB 454 not holding up and asked about it too.  GB himself told me not to worry about the  RB 454 ... he did say something like he wouldn't own any other  Taurus though.  The thread is in the Handgun Hunting forum.

I am in about the same boat as Graybeard, pretty much the only taurus I will even consider anymore is a RB.
They seem to be held to a higher standard from the factory, the reason I say that is because I have two in 454 and have fired dozens more and have yet to see any problems of any kind.
Yeah I have heard tales of bad ones, and I am sure there are a few out there, but it always seem to go something like this...
"my buddies brothers boss said this" or my friends dad said that"
I have yet to talk to another owner in person who has had problems, and I know a whole bunch of people who own them. In fact in one of mine I shoot nothing but super hot loads(well above max loads listed in the manuals) and the only thing I have ran into is a case or two slightly stuck in the cylinder.
That being said I have as of late been rethinking my stance on the whole S&W agreement and will likely be looking to them for my revolver needs again, but I will not rule out a RB either...... :D

DH, really look that S$W over real good before you buy! I had a new 629 that I bought for a ccdw. 3"bbl it carried real nice, and was real comforting in the north woods. I would carry 300 grainers hard cast in the woods, then 240 silvertips on the streets. Figured I had all the bases covered.
BUT, I had lots of problems with it too. sent it back to the factory twice, and it came back in worse condition that when it was sent in.
Here is a link to my posts here about it.

I've had a RB .454 for about a year now, and it hasn't even given me a hickup.  handles big loads just fine, feels good in the hands, shoots well, smooth.  I don't think that the RB would have any problems at all with the .500.  IF there is one gun taurus did right, it's the RB.
