Mail Order Guns
« on: February 04, 2006, 08:18:33 PM »
Just wanted to know who you guys go through to order Firearms into your various states and where from? how easy is it done? The Wife and i are moving to Georgia from Australia at the end of the year and i will need to sell my Guns here and re-stock when i get there. I am at the understanding that you dont need a Firearms Licence like we do here to get a gun but what criteria do you need? Any help would be great. I am moving up to Nth Georgia near Chattanooga if that makes any difference to where i should order from....thanks guys :D

Weatherby223 - once youhave established your residency (i.e., driver's license, etc.,) you should be able to purchase firearms locally from any dealer in your area.  When ordering from out of state, or even in state from a distant dealer you must go through FFL (Federal Firearms License) holders (gunsmiths).  This is for rifles and shotguns.

For pistols you may need a permit to own/carry concealed in Georgia, but I'm not the expert on this.

I am sorry to hear that you will have to see your guns and can't send them to a FFL dealer before you come stateside.

Maybe some of our Georgia folks can help you further.  Mikey.

Mikey gave you good information.... the only thing i would add to that is don`t over look your local gun-shows.
There you get to see-um, feel-um and if you like-um get to dicker on price.  Good luck on your "re-stock".

Have you already checked and verified you can't bring your current guns with you? I'd have thought that if you were moving here to stay you might be able to. Are you a US or Austrailian citizen? If not US do you plan to become one?

Hi All,

I seem to recall that certain types cannot be imported into the US. I do remember being told that some of my rifles would not have been allowed into the US, military rifles being a bit of a problem I recall. However as I am not curently in a position to move to the US it's a moot point for me :( .

Good Luck with your relocation

If you are already a U.S. Citizen, please disregard the rest of this post.

If you are other than a U.S. citizen, you will need first to apply to obtain a permit to possess a firearm from the U.S. Government, before having any firearms in your possession.  Under the law, this includes possesion of borrowed or rented weapons.  I believe the permits are now issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  They could at least direct you to the appropriate party.  I don't know the what the application process entails, but assume it involves a more extensive background check.

If you do not do so, and you encounter law enforcement as an alien in possession of a firearm, ICE will revoke your visa, and you can be facing Felony charges also.  After any jail time is served, you would be removed to your home country.   Persons convicted of this charge can never recieve a new U.S. visa.

I don't know your citizenship, but I hate to see good folks run afoul of the law through not being informed.  That's the law as it now reads.  Here in the SW, Aliens in Possession of a Firearm without a permit are almost always aggressively prosecuted, due to the Border-related crime down here.  They  may be somewhat more forgiving in GA, but I wouldn't count on it.

Regards,
azmike

I am still an Aussie Citizen and will keep that and gain US status as well. Our countries have a good relationship so duel citizenship is no problem. I have sold most of my Hunting gear now but still holding on to my BRNO model 2 which i cant bear to lose. Only other thing is My Weatherby which i can replace easy enough and reloading grap etc. May even buy a new Remington which i can afford over there (cant afford one here). I hope to enjoy hunting as much in the States as i do here in Australia. I am a keen Fox shooter but i dont think you would encounter them in the numbers we do. These Red Foxes took me 2 hours by spotlight the night before with my .223. I however am looking forward to giving Turkeys and Bobcats a go. Thanks again guys for your replies.

You don't need to be a US citizen to buy firearms, but you have to be "legal".
1. when you enter US you will be given a worthless looking piece of paper with an alien number;
2. after you enter the country apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) and get a driver's license
3. save the rent, electric, garbage, phone, and other utility bills for 3 months.

Buy a hunting permit, and take 1, 2, and 3 with you and buy yourself the firearms that you want from the many stores that sell them.

If you have some particularly valuable or heirloom guns, you can import those ino US, but it's a bit more complicated and costly. It will take import paperwork and fees. Better have them sent by mail, don't show up at the border with guns. This is worth doing only for special guns. If your guns are replaceable, you would be better off selling in Australia and buying here in US.

Forget about Remchesters, get a Tikka.

A bit late, but i hope that it helps. I just talked on the phone with some "federales" to make sure the info is accurate.

One last word of caution: if you are associated with Pakistan, Yemen, Iran, and other such nice places, don't try to get any guns in US.
