Author Topic: HELP: 375 h&h vs 338 WM (bolt vs autoloader) (Read 1137 times)

Here is the situation, my friend was looking to get a winchester model 70 CLASSIC stainless in 375 h&h, and now since winchester stopped making this rifle AND is going out of bussiness, he wants the one I own (I bought mine about a month ago and it doesn't even have 80 rounds through it yet)...

He is offering to give me his Browning BAR in 338 winchester mag safari grade (which by the way is almost darn near new, he bought it a year ago and it also doesn't even have 100 rounds through it yet)

What do you guys think ? I mean auto loaders are AWESOM esspecially if they are chambered in something that is widly used on ANYTHING in north america (talkin about his 338 WM)

I have shot his rifle before, and I LOVE IT, but unfortunatly I can't afford a new rifle. I have always wanted a large-bore autoloader (but those don't really exist, so the 338 WM is the clostest thing to a "big boar")

I don't know about you, but there was a good reason you bought the M70 in 375 H&H in the first place. I expect those reasons are still valid. If I was you I would stick with the bolt gun.

As much as I love the 338,the choice would be very easy for me,I'd keep my model 70 375HH.I wouldn't even think twice about it.
I know of at least one state that outlaws auto loaders for hunting and that is Pa.There could be more,I don't know.To me,there are to many things that can go wrong with an auto loader and a good bolt is full proof,and idiot pruff.I'd love to have a model 70 in 375 HH,just to have one and shoot it from time to time.It's one of the all time greats,in Winchester and the 375HH.

I had the same auto but it was a 300win it shot great. But I to was afraid of the state laws and sold my. Keep your bolt. :grin:

I wouldn't take two Browning BARs for my Winchester M70 Classic Stainless 375 H&H. Three, maybe, because then I'd be able to sell the three of them and be assured I could afford the premium I would have to pay when I found another Winchester M70 Classic Stainless 375 H&H.

everybody here is telling me to keep my 375.... I mean I love the rifle, and from what someone else told me, those classic stainless winchesters in 375 h&h are going to be VERY valuable in the next year or so. everyone is telling me to keep it.

I guess i'll keep it, but man, I love that browning BAR 338 WM :cry: , too bad I can't afford it

I had two x-wives too,I loved them and couldn't afford them,I got over it. :lol:

Keep the 375 bolt and put one dollar in a coffee can daily until you can afford the BAR. What in North America are you hunting? I had a BAR with the BOSS, a great fast shooting gun. Good for multiple shots on a tough animal or multiple animals.

I just went through hell and back the last couple of days trying to get me another winchester model 70 classic stainless in 375 h&h, I finally got it for $1050..........So now I have 2 (one used and one brand new)

Going to hold off on the new one for another 6 months or so, then going to sell it and hopfully make some extra cash

I have owned a .338 BAR and is it sweet to shoot, kind of like an 06. There is a trade off with any autoloader but we did win WWII with an auto and if I remember the other side (both of them) had bolt guns, maybe I just made some experts mad but have shot all the guns including the Garand and the real service BAR. You miss the horrendous recoil of the bolt actions but both rifles have there place, that's for sure.
ps: never had a jam with my BAR.

My 375 H&H is a SAKO bolt action and would not want any other action for this rifle or caliber. Maybe a double in 375 H&H.

I wouldn't trade my 375 for a bar 338 but each to his own.

Like most of the other guys have said keep your SS 375 Win. In my mind you would be trading down. I Would never make a trade like that without a hunk of change to boot. Just my opinion

I would say, if he is your good buddy, you just hunt and shoot together. He uses yours once in a while, and you use his. Then it's like both of you have both guns.

Plus, you get to keep owning a classic, that goes up in value, and you can always be proud of. When you can afford it, get an autoloader.

the first post said he thought about selling his winchester mag cause winchester was going out of business. It is only one plant. here is his quote.

thats correct, the winchester brand is no longer going to be an American brand, which means I probebly will never buy winchester again lol,
