been cleaning and cleaning my new Win M70

So, I got one of the clearance Winchester M70 Black Shadow combos from WalMart.  It's a 270 and has to be 3-4 years old guessing.  Well, I got it out to clean off the newness.  If I had paid full price I think that I would be a little disappointed:  The Simmons scope-chunked it.  The flimsy Weaver style bases-holes loose enough to move the bases left, right, and back/forth.  The trigger guard- plastic.  The action screws-slotted, not allen screws.  I understand that the Black Shadow was the shave every last dime off the gun to sell it at WalMart type rifle for Winchester....but man!  The cheap parts I could deal with.  The rust on the surface of the bluing and on the bolt I could deal with (it's been sitting awile, I'll cut them some slack).  But when Winchester assembled the rifle some guy glopped the thread locker onto the barrel threads when it was fitted to the receiver.

There was Loctite in in the stock, on the action screws, in the bolt lug recesses, even in the mouth of the chamber.

Maybe I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but being my first Winchester then I am kind of disappointed.  Maybe it will be a shooter.  Will find out when I get some dies.  Just thinking been thinking that most people who dog Simmons scopes do so because of experience with the cheap $30 ones.  Maybe Winchester has gotten a bad rep lately because of people buying cheap $350 combos from WalMart and getting what they pay for.

Anyone know a good way to check that the Loctite is out of the chamber?

:) Yeap, sounds about what I got...just like yours and on clearance-$225 M70 in 270. Actually, and this might sound like freak luck, but all I did was run 1 wet patch down the barrel, and with the cheap Simmons on it..with in 8 shots, had zero and a group with the last three.
3 shot group 1/2" at 100yards   :toast: with Winchester 130gr Super-X. I haven't had a chance to go out with it again, and that might just have been at the planets in line..but Hey, I'll take it. Hope to do some long range work with it to really test it out. I do want to see what consistant groupings it can do.
Hope your's shoots as well  :agree:

Sounds like one of those guns that somebody bought and botched up, used it for a few days to hunt with, didn't take care of it, then returned it to Walmarts for a refund when he was done with it.  I don't think Winchester would let something like that out of the production facility.

The same thing happens with Big Screen TV's at the bigger retailers during Super Bowl week.  Two weeks from now, big screen tv's will be on clearance.

I don't believe you can return a firearm to Wal-mart.

For the record, WalMart won't take returns only send out for repair.

Nasem, have you done anything to your rifle?  New stock, floated barrel, anything like that?  Was going to lighten the trigger and load some 130 gr NBT or GameKings.  The rifle itself is great, the stock....

I'll have to post some pics of what I've done to my $135 ugly duckling Model 70---I turned it into a very nice rifle for very little cash paid out------when I get some time I'll take some pics.

Guess I don't get the Winchester can do no wrong attitude---if that were the case---we'd all be talking about our full price rifles instead of our Walmart bargains and the plant would be staying open.

If I had to pay full price---I wouldn't have touched it with a ten foot pole-----but for $135--I'm quite happy with my purchase. Too bad I had to pay extra for that crap Simmons scope that came with it----talk about a throw away.

Oh ya----I'm pretty sure acetone or mineral spirits will break up Loc-tite.

Go to the hardware store and read the package of a new tube----pretty sure it says on there what will break it up.

Chuck a bore brush that fits the chamber into an electric drill.Wipe acetone in the chamber and spin the brush in the chamber. It will all come out.
Sloppy crap. That's why the plant is closing. They have been putting out substandard stuff for several years now.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

The last Winchester I bought was a Black Shadow - a 94 AE in 444.  Before I even got it to the range it had to go back to the factory twice because it was so poorly put together.  After I got it back from repair I ordered, from Winchester, a full length magazine tube, a rear stock for a Timber Carbine, a front stock for a Traditional Rifle and had my gunsmith put it all together along with performing a trigger job.  She is now one super smooth and incredibly beautiful little rifle - the wood is gorgeous for plain factory wood, the trigger easy, the action smooth and after firelapping the barrel she will shoot heavy loads into the same hole at 100 yds.  Definately a -'go-to' lever for anything that needs shootin'.....

Sorry to say that the quality of the Winchester rifle has gone downhill but you can really improve on whatcha got without much effort.  A new piece of nice looking wood and a steel trigger guard and you should be in great shape after cleaning her up.  Give her a little attention and she just might surprise you.  Mikey.

The Model 70 Black Shadow .300 Win Mag I bought 3 weeks ago shot back to back 5 shot groups that were just under one inch at a 100yds.  Since then I've lightened the trigger a bit and floated the barrel.  Looking forward to having another go with her next month.
I aim to please - but often miss.

Mikey,
Thats what I am hoping.  I am looking at a Boyds stock with the money that the IRS owes me (a nice change there).  Was comparing Winchester factory prices with Brownells on the trigger guard or new bottom metal.  Brownells is almost double.  But....I am not confident that Winchester will have my parts on hand either.  Either way will find out in a few days when the refund gets here.

Plan on lightening the trigger tonight or tomorrow.  The way that I figure it the action alone is worth the $225 that I paid for it.  Hey, if it turns out to be a shooter then so much the better.  Otherwise, it is going to PacNor.

Thanks, Omaha, will try the acetone.

bluebayou - your rifle is new.  Contact Browning/Winchester (now I can't find the dang telephone number) and tell them your problem - that you just purchased the rifle, that it appears to have been in storage for some time, that it is/was rusted, and that the stock and the trigger guard is appear to be of poor quality or buggered in transit and that you would like a new wood stock for the M70 and a metal trigger guard to go with it - they just might send you those parts under a warranty.  The last time I called those folks they were a pleasure to deal with.  Hope it works for you.  Mikey.

Inadvertantly, I did break the plastic trigger guard (too much gorilla on the action screws).  So I called Winchester to get a new trigger guard.  TWO different people told me that I had to ship the entire gun back to Winchester.  At this point I thought that I wasn't making myself clear.  The second person said "that's a restricted part".  Okay........."let me talk to the parts department and I will just buy one."  Same deal.  "If you want it replaced then send the gun in"  I voted for just paying $20 for an aluminum one.  I will say that even if the 3rd person didn't know a lot at least she put me on hold, went to the parts bins, and physically handled the part.  I got it 2 days later by UPS.

No complaints on the delivery, but MAN their customer service procedures were a little lame.  I figured to ask for a free replacement, can't hurt to ask, but after that.....how hard should it be to spend your own money?  If anyone else is thinking about getting metal mag followers, trigger guards, or hex bolts now would probably be the time.
