shoulder shot.

I have heard that a moose can go some distance after being shot and may take several shots. I know about the lung shot but will a 180 gr. Barnes Triple Shock from a 300 weatherby break the shoulder of a Moose?

Technically speaking a moose doesn't have a shoulder. None of the deer family game folks hunt does. So technically speaking the "shoulder" shot does not exist.

There is no bone to bone connection joint in deer, moose, elk, etc as in humans. The upper end of the leg is held in place ONLY by muscle and tendons and bone to bone as we have. So there is no actual "shoulder" to shoot for or thru. It's really only the leg bone you are shooting for not a shoulder JOINT as there is no joint.

If you want a complete discussion on this subject JJ Hack posted one on the Hunting in Africa Forum once a year or more ago, I'm sure if you asked he could find it and bring it back to the top.

So now what is the real question you want an answer to? There is no shoulder to "break". Can it break upper leg bones on two sides? Maybe. Will it hit both? Highly unlikely.

That Barnes triple shock will go through anything you hit properly,I used it on a couple deer and a cow elk this last year after having some Nosler Acuubonds fail, the one I was able to recover performed just like the picture on the box.I have shot Noslers for 20 years and I am really impressed by these new Barnes bullets. The one i recovered went in the front shoulder of a cow elk at a quartering towards angle,it broke the front shoulder blade, traveled all the way to the rear quarter stopping just under the hide, took out a big chunk of spine on its way there.

Graybeard - thanks for the anatomy lesson. The 2 bones I was referring to were the scapula and the humerus.  I was wondering what would happen if I hit these bones.  It sounds like a broken " shoulder" and the animal going down. Thanks or both replies.

I put a 180 grain ballistic tip fired from a 30-06 through the scapula of a bull moose.  The animal went less than 50 yds.  This was in 1989 when the NBT's were supposedly very flimsey.

My brother-in-law shot clear through the chest of a small bull using the current version of the NBT using a slightly faster loading.

If the bullets you're talking about are supposed to be tougher than the ballistic tip, I don't think you'd have any problem breaking bone.  The only problem might be under-expansion.
