Limbsaver recoil pad question
« on: February 01, 2006, 05:11:05 AM »
If I buy a limbsaver recoil pad, custom fit for my Winchester M70 with wood stock, am I likely to have to cut the stock down to keep the same reach?  The gun is a 1972 model, in 30-06 and only has a butt plate, no recoil pad at all.

BoneDigger,I've replaced two recoil pad's with the limbsaver's,one rifle
was already a little short in the fit for me so the limbsaver extended
it to fit right, the 2nd rifle i've used this past season and i'm going to
remove 1/2 inch of stock and replace, it's just a tad to long as is.

I have done this to most of my guns, but on that Mod. 70 I might get a slip on pad and move the scope a little further back.   I have no problem hacking off the butt of a newer gun with an ugly stock to add a real recoil pad.   But on a valuable gun like that, I would go to plan "B".

length of pull

I haved learned that my best for  length of pull is 13.5 " with my hunting clothes on. I just tell the gunsmith to have a length of pull of 13.5 and if the cut they cut.  Don'r forget to include the hunting jacket and layers so it is perfect for hunting not shooting in a T-shirt in the summertime!  Buckfever

If it were me, I'd avoid cutting a stock at all.  You never know--you might want to sell it in the future, and it's easier to sell an unaltered stock than one that is altered.  I know you've considered this, but adjusting your scope might be the way to go.

Hold on to that Winchester if you can.

I just bought a Rem. SPS in 7mm Mag and they come with a Limbsaver pad on them. It makes the 7 Mag feel like a .243....        Sean
