Rem. 700 ADL Accuracy
« on: January 31, 2006, 09:26:06 AM »
All,

I just finished putting a Burris Fullfield II on my new Remington 700 ADL 270 Win. I picked up brand new on sale.  I have heard both good and bad things about the 700 ADLs.

What kind of accuracy should I expect from this rifle?  I have not shot any groups yet so I don not know what brand of ammo it likes.  I would just like an idea of what size of groups are reasonable.

Thanks for the help!

Which ADL is it? Maybe Im confusing it with another model, but is it a wood stock, or the black composite ones?
I'm not terribly familiar with the ADL line, I apologize.

As far as accuracy, noone can tell you how it will be. Ive seen 2 exact models of a rifle shoot the same ammo, and while one liked all of it, the other hated most of it. All barrels are different.

But in general, if you do your part as a shooter, and find the load it likes, you should be able to get small groups at 100 yards. As far as size?

I could hit quarters all day at 100 yards with my .30-06 700 Mountain rifle with factory ammo(until a terrible flinch set in). If you dont have a lemon, and you are a decent shot, theres no reason your ADL cant match that. The .270 has some high B.C. ammo available for it, so thats a plus.

The scope you have is fine, no worries there.

I purchased a 700 ADL a couple of weeks ago at Wal-Mart. It has a 24 inch barrel, no sights, and a synthetic stock. Caliber is 243 Winchester. Two weekends ago I had a chance to shoot with some friends that also own 243's (both are Savage package rifles).

I was fortunate in that they brought a pile of different brands and bullet weights while I bought a box a Federal Preminum 85 grain Gamekings and a Remington 80 grain HP Power-lokts. I put a 3x9x40 scope in Weaver rings and bases and had at it.

I placed my first target at 25 yards just to make sure where it hit and fired at a nail I used for the bull. Looking through the scope I though I missed the target entirely. Believe it or not I drove that nail right trough the piece of wood. This has to be a good omen. Shot again and hit at the point of aim.

I moved the target out to 100 yards and fired a group. Not bad but not great. Through the morning I shot 8-10 different loads and this rifle shot best with the Gamekings and Cabela's bulk ammo (75 grain V-max). Groups were in the 1.3-1.4 inch range with most ammo and if I did my part they would improve. This particular rifle did not like the Power-lokts or Hornady light magnum 100 gr SPs. Overall I was pleased with how it shot and figure that when the weather is nicer, things will improve.

I have never been a big Remington 700 fan. This is the 5th 700 that I have owned and it shoots about like the other 4. However, the trigger is one of the worst factory triggers I have ever had. I bought a Ruger M77 last year and its trigger pull (hope that is the correct term) is far lighter. I'm not real comfortable adjusting the trigger myself so I dropped it off at the gunsmith for adjustment.

When compared to the Savages, this rifle felt far superior and more sturdy. The stock was stiffer and the action felt more solid. However those Savages far outshot this Remington with every load tried. No contest. I was shooting groups less than an inch with one of them. I will say that the felt recoil of the Savage was greater than that of the ADL.

Overall this isn't a bad rifle for the $286 I paid for it. It needs some work but is a keeper. A better trigger and glass will go a long way to improving things.

I have a like new ADL that is around 25 years old.  I cut the stock down for my son.  It has been an accurate rifle.  It does a good job with the .277 bullets from 110 grain Serria to the 150 grain WW Power Point.  I picked up a very nice Remington Mountain Rifle stock at a gun show a few years ago.  I suspect most people looking at it would not realize it was a $149.99 ADL700.

I'd be interested in knowing which 700s youve shot. Also..

I don't know how bent you are on getting it to shoot better, but you might consider a bedding job of some sort.

1.5" for such an affordable rifle seems fine to me. If it were a full on varmint rig with thick barrel and weighed twice the ADL, I'd be dissappointed.

I may look into picking one up if they are that cheap. Checking walmarts site right now....

Not sure if you are asking me but I have owned 2 wood stocked ADL's (late 80-early 90's vintage) and 2 BDL's.  I didn't say I was disappointed only that the Savage Package rifles out shot this particular rifle.  The trigger pull was 7.5 pounds according to my gunsmith and has been lightlened to 3.5.  He felt this would could improve the accuracy.  I have not had the opportunity to shoot it again.

I paid $286 at out local wal-mart just after Christmas.  This particular rifle has a 24 inch barrel, no sights, no J lock, synthetic stock, and a matt finish.  I believe they are in the $360-$380 price range normally.  According to the clerk, they are also available in 270 and 30-06.  The only thing I really don't like is the plastic trigger guard.

My Ruger M77 MKII 7x57 also outshoots this rifle with the factory loads I have tried and had a better trigger out of the box.

I've never had a remington that had a suitable trigger out of the box. I though this was a given and most got theirs worked on accordingly.

Ive never had a ADL/BDL variety of Remington, theyve all been higher end Varmint types geared more towards precision shooting(except for the mountain rifle). My dad however has a 25 year old 7mm BDL and it still shoots like a champ. How I dont know because he didnt take care of the barrel as far as cleaning goes. The trigger on that is atrocious, but he says he likes it that way  :-D

EDIT: The VLS from Walmart came with a crisp trigger pull.

Just today bought a ADL in a 22-250. I already have one in a 7mm-08 and it is a real good shooter so I expect the same with the 22-250. I wanted it for a good truck gun and what ever. The nice thing was when I went to clean it it only took a few swips and nothing else came out. At least they still try to clean em before they leave the factory. Maybe I can get it out tomorow depending on the weather.

I have a Remington ADL Synthetic .30-06 w/ a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40.  I get sub-one inch groups, actually I can cover them with a nickel whatever that measures, with my handloads:

Remington brass
Winchester magnum primers
51.4 gr IMR 4064
150 gr Nosler Accubond

Having said that though, you'll use the same load and get different results out of an identical rifle.  You'll just have to experiment with your .270 Winchester loads or ammunition, but you can expect excellent repeatable, results from the rifle--you have to find what the rifle likes.

One side note, not all ammunition is manufactured the same; therefore, I'd recommend loading your own.  You can take a box of cartridges, weigh each powder charge, and find many of them are not the same.  This inconsistency does not lend itself to repeatable results from your rifle.  You can control for this inconsistency though by handloading.

I have a ADL synthetic, stock, out of the box with my first hand load with 129grain hunting bullets I got sub 1'' groups. It had a terrible trigger that I lightened up myself easily.
