Author Topic: Idid it! Ordered a Remington...its been a while (Read 980 times)

I acquired a Winny Mod 70 Fthrwt 7MM 08 recently to fill a desire for a carry rifle to stillhunt Whitetails. Unfortunately after a few trips to the range with some favorite loads and bullets I was not satisfied.
Rather than deal with Winchester ( who knows with that mess?) I walked into a local hardware store and worked a swap.

He offered a new CDL...EVEN UP... or a Mountain Rifle for $25.. :eek: It was a tough choice (because I could of gotten a .280 in the Mtn Rifle)...but I ordered a CDL in 7MM 08. I hand load and the 24" bbl intrigues me.

I will report back in a week or two with a range report. Anyone have a CDL out there? How is it shooting for you? :lol

I did the same thing about 1990. Except I opted for the Mountain...
Terrific deer rifle, and beautiful stock. I hope for you that they are as well made now .. Just didn't like the fit of the f/w 70. The Mountain is one of my 4 go to rifles, (99f (1955), Mark V, Vanguard, Mountain)....

I got a CDL 270 with a 3x9 Conquest. At the range I can hit a quarter with the first two shots at 100 yards. I don't know why, I guess because I'm a rifle nut, I sent it down to Austin for a $400 accuracy job. I believe they do good work, but the rifle shoots about the same. I hate to hear about your bad shooting Winchester. I just bought a Feather weight 6.5X55. I hope I have better luck.

I had a .270 Winny Fthwt a couple years ago that was a tackdriver. This one couldn't get under 2" with a doz different load attempts. I checked over scope, rings, bases, stock inlet etc.....

It was probably a Monday morning deal... :roll:

Well I picked up the CDL today...I was very impressed! This is a very nice rifle. :-)
Longwinters and I gave it the good going over...He thought it was one of the nicest Rems he had ever seen.

The trigger came in at over 8 lbs so off to the Gunsmith tomorrow...not that it is not fixable...I like a 40 oz trigger and will put a new one in. I do a lot of BR shooting.

Range report possibly by Sunday...if we dont get more snow! :x

You can save yourself some money here by just having the gunsmith work on the original remington trigger.I did,on my CDL and it is great.You can do what you want but I had a Timney installed on my Reminton 22-250 and I can't tell the difference between that and my CDL.

I am going to do that except not all Rem triggers can safely go below 3 lbs...I have had several done...some have had to had after market parts. Hopefully this one will be adjustable down to 2 1/2lbs. :lol:

My gusmith told me he couldn't get the trigger on my new Remington below 3lbs. They've made some changes to it recently. I used to get them down around 2lbs. rather easily, but I guess those days are gone. Best wishes.

I had good luck putting in a Jard trigger kit. It replaces the internal parts with a two lever system and is available in different weights. Cost's about $60.00
Mines off getting reworked into a 308win as I'm a lefty. It'll be done some time in the not to distant future, maybe 07 :eek:

My Smith is a "wizard at 700 triggers...This trigger is absolutely amazing!! :shock:

2 1/4# and ZERO CREEP... Checked the safety factor several ways including slamming the butt against the workbench hard.

I cant wait to get it to the range... :lol:

You can't go wrong with a Remington! Just bought a 700 LSS in 30-06. Did a trigger job, glassed, pillar bed and free floated the barrel.
Loaded some lapua brass with 49.8 grains of Varget, WLRM primer, Barnes Triple X in 168 grain, OAL 3.374. At 100 yards two nearly inside each other and the third is touching!! :grin: Cover with a quarter!! I'm very happy...

It can be done.My smith took mine down to 2-1/2 pounds and we gave it the slam/bang test too.It's great for accuracy work.
