The 681 S&W A RUGGED Wheelgun
« on: January 27, 2006, 10:59:58 PM »
Hello
I happened to get hold of a new in Box EARLY model 681 Yesterday. They realy built this revolver to handle the magnum rounds. I cant wait to try some stout Mag. loads in it.  Regards, Hammerdown

Your 681 is a very nice find. The 4" 681 was the issue revolver for the THP before they adopted semiauto handguns. Yours should easily handle all the magnum rounds you care to shoot. Enjoy!

Hello TennRifleman
I called S&W service Right after purchasing it. They told me that the 681 was BUILT to take all the Magnum punishment one could give it..  I will be firing it today, and have had several say this revolver shoots point of aim and is VERY accurate as well. These was a indexing issue on early one's in this model the same as the 586's and I hope this one will be fine. What they had was when you fired and pulled back the hammer to cycle it to the next round the primers would come in contact and actually RUB on the recoil shield. I had a 586 that did this and rather than send it back for the Modification that they also mark the crane area with the letter"M" I simply over sunk the primers and had no issues.  Best regards, Hammerdown

Hiya Hammerdown
The 681 was the gun my department issued up until the mid 90's, when we switched to automatics our average qualification scores dropped about 10 percent.  The chief let us buy our old guns for a hundred bucks a pop, I wish I'd bought a dozen.  I always thought of the 681 as the modern version of the perfect M & P, suitable for magnums, and nearly indestructible.  We once put on a demonstration for the chief, shooting soda cans at 75 yards with them.  After a bit of warming up, we went 18 for 18, the three of us.  The bum still wouldn't let us switch back.  After carrying S&W guns for all those years, the Berettas felt like clubs.  I still don't like them.

Apparently the U.S. Military has changed their minds........they're dropping the 9mm Berettas, and going to a DA 45!  Hooray!

Really?  I heard they were going to .45s but I assumed it would be a .45 automatic.

Thanks.  I figured that out a few minutes after posting and realizing I was dumb.  One can hope.  I used a wheel gun in the Air Force years ago, and it was DA also.  But it was .38 special not .45.  The good old days!
