I got a bit tired of the ejector on my 1885 and decided to deactivate it. That was easy, but then the extractor stuck up and blocked loading. Pushing it down each time to load was a pain. I ended up putting the ejector parts back in.
The light finally came on!! I took the spring out and headed for the local hardware store. I got the softest spring they had in the same size (actually a bit long but side cutters took care of that). Now I'm not chasing brass or getting it hammered against the stop. I get a very nice "soft eject" against the stop.
