I picked up a used model 788 Rem. in .223 (w/ cheap scope) a few months ago for $300. After shooting clover leaf groups, I wouldn't take twice that. I previously owned another 788 -.223 but it had a rough barrel and shot about 1.5 inches. I sold it for $300. My 700 BDL that I paid about $500 new will shoot about .75"-- after I bedded the action and floated the barrel. Used guns are the best buy but you never know if you are buying a tack driver or a scatter gun. Nowdays you run the same risk with many of the new guns. Best of luck on your endeavor.
