I hunt elk here in manitoba. Good herds in both the duck mountains, riding mountain, in the interlake (between lakes manitaba and winnipeg, and a decent herd in the spruce woods. Our biggest problem here in manitoba; and I know I'm opening up a can of worms here, is the "sustinance hunting" and I'm using this term extremely loosely, by the natives in this province. There have been confirmed reports of whole herds being slaughtered; cows, calfs, bulls. The hunters who spend millions in licences know damn well that they are selling this meat on the black market. But the gov't always handles the natives with kid gloves, so it continues. Do you get the same problem in Idaho?

upnorth,
No I can't say that we do have that problem. Not that I've really noticed anyway. I hunt all public land in the middle of Idaho and there are a lot of hunters but not that many actually get killed. Defenently not enough to sell on the black market. Sometimes if Indians get into an area they will kill everything in sight but that's about it.

well up north have i got a funny story for you,

in the tiger hills just south of Rathwell, my uncle and some friends where hunting deer in the seventies. one of them had a semi-auto .303( one of those globco 555 that rick mentioned), and was seperated from the group. they all heard 4 or 5 shots in rapid succesion and this fella comes running back waving his arms and babbling about "deer.. big deer... monster buck..." so they up and go to take a look and you guessed it, it weren't no deer but a bull elk. so they went and got a bale trailer and dropped the carcass betwenn the bales so no one would see it and hid it in a grainery on the farm. when grandpa found out there was a tanned hide or two and elk steaks for supper.( this is the same uncle that shot out his tire trying to load a .30-.30 while driving across a plowed field) :)  :)
" oh we didn't sink the bismarck, and we didn't fight at all, we spent our time in Norfolk and we really had a ball. chasing after women while our ship was overhauled, living it up on grapefruit juice and sick bay alcohol"

snake,
Have you heard of Notellum creek, kind of by that rock and next to that big tree.
No really I hunt about two hours from Boise straight into the mountains. The town I live in is McCall. I've always wondered what it was like hunting in Canada also. I haven't heard too many elk stories from there so I was wondering how many people hunt elk there.
