Custom Rifle????????????????
« on: January 25, 2006, 05:51:23 PM »
If you take an action, say a (military)Mauser action and have a Gunsmith true up the face and bolt face, lap the lugs then barrel it, maybe put it in a stock and pillar bed it, blue it of course, then would that be considered a Custom rifle?

I would consider that to be a custom rifle.  What difference is there, really, between an action made by Rem/Win/Sav, trued, rebarrelled, stocked, etc., and having the same done with a Mauser action??  None!

BTW - what military Mauser action were ya thinkin' of using?  Mikey.

Most would consider that a custom rifle.  However, lapping the lugs is not a great idea for older, surface-hardened actions because the 'smith could easily cut through the very thin hardened shell and ruin the action.  This isn't the 1950s - when spending the money for a custom rifle today, use a modern action rather than an old beat up military action.  The new action will not require drilling and tapping for a scope, it won't need to be polished and blued, it won't need a special safety, special trigger.....the list goes on.  You will be happier with the new action, and the cost will be similar if not less than the old military action.

Regardless of what you call it, if it is done right your idea would result in a very nice rifle.

Thanks for the info, I have a 1910 Mexican Mauser rebarrelled as a 257 Rbt. Imp. and 3 of the  1909 Argentine actions made up as rifles. The Mexican came to me with a sewer pipe bore but the outside of the rifle was in very good+ condition. And the 09's were as actions only, one is an 06, one is a 280 Ack Imp and the other is still waiting for inspiration.
The 280 Imp was completed by myself and a shooting buddy, he did the blueing and wood work and I did the metal work and barrelling/chambering. It all worked out very well, the 280 averages 1 inch groups with 150 gr. bullets.
