Working with Damascus

Anyone here have experience with Damascus blades? Do they require any special care and feeding? I'm looking to either buy a finished knife or building my own useing snake-eye pattern steel. Could annealing/heat treating or even cutting, grinding, or sharpening de-laminate or otherwise damage this metal?

Nope to all the questions. I've only worked with damascus once, since frankly it doesn't impress me, but I had no problems with it.  If you grind your own blade, after polishing it you'll need to apply etchant, available at radio shack or some of the Knife Supply Houses.  Outside of that, its pattern welded steel.  There's lots of instructin avaiable on the internet on how to do a damascus blade.

Care and feeding of a damascus blade depends on the types of materials used for the blend.  There is high carbon damascus and stainless damascus available.  Each has different characteristics.  About the only way to de-laminate GOOD quality damascus (yes there is poor quality out there) is to try to forge it at the incorrect temperature.   If you are just grinding a blade to shape then heat treating it, you shouldn't have any problems.
